I have a Dogfather with a rubber handle here in the shop for a sheath and it never really struck me till right now, will the handle be OK with the heat from molding the sheath?

I'd sure hate to have the handle melt to the kydex.

Hello

Shotgunner...

That All depends on how much heat you are actually using..

The kydex can leave a line if you aren't careful...

You could give the handle a little layer of protection with a layer or two of tape...

If you are careful it shouldn't be a problem,, but CAN happen if you apply too much heat to the area,, Especially with fitting...

Also take care to have a good fit,, if the handle is too soft as on say the Gerber big Rock,, the constant rubbing in and out will eat away at the handle material...
A little,,and I do mean little lube in that area can fix that problem...
Shoot me an email and I'll tell you what kind of lube to use..

Thanks for the advice guys.

Sheath didn't go over so well..... No damage to the knife or anything, sheath looked good but resheathing was an issue, as in it couldn't be done.

The kydex hit the handle and wouldnt allow the knife to go in.

I need to buy a heat gun so I can flair the opening..... Oh well.

I have been playing with kydex for a bit, and have had modest results from using a pocket torch (normally used for soldering) to make small adjustments. The key there would be to heat lightly, not putting it in direct flame.

Yaa for sure,, you will need a heat gun..

I do EVERYTHING with a heat gun...
I've used a toaster oven 1-2 times,, and I have no need for it...

Even large sheaths 22" + I do with a heat gun...

Have fun

I've been saying I need one for a long time but never want to throw the money at it.

I started out with my kitchen oven and got used to it so now the thought of learning all over with a different source of heat is a daunting propisition.

Then again looking at my results and looking at yours...... Mayhaps I should consider it......

If you are only going to use a heat gun for sheaths the HF duo-temp one works just fine and it`s only $10 when its on sale.

Hey Shotgunner...

Yaaa well don't go throwing allot of money at them...

I've done pretty good over the years..
I've been through only 3-4 heat guns in 10 years,, and I just get the Blacked Pecker ones for around $15.00.. you don't need professional stuff here...

When they die, I chop the cord off with a Busse, and my son uses them as Ray Guns.. LOL

BTW.. I've got a Dogfather sheath here is you need one..
