Quick Newbie Sheath Question

Would someone mind explaining the string that loops through holes in the bottom of a belt sheath and dangles? What do you do with it, exactly?

It allows that end of the sheath to be attached to your leg/belt/harness to keep it from flopping, rubbing and making noise.
