Is the 6" "premium" a crystalon?

Is it worth $22 if you already have the 6" "economy"?

They sell them at the local mom & pop hardware store, but that seems expensive, and I already have (and like) the economy model.

Any insight welcome. :)

Yes.
iirc, I got mine at Osh for $15. Quality of premium coarse side is way superior than the economy. Fine side is about 20-25% better than economy.

I think you can get the Norton Crystolon 8 inch combo stone for only a few bucks more from Amazon!

To the best of my knowledge, if it doesn't say "Crystalon" on it, it isn't the best SiC stone Norton makes. I like my Econo stone well enough, but it lives in a box at work, my Crystalon is my favorite stone. There is a noticeable difference. They're cheap enough to order from online retailer if you can't find one local.

The premium stone is a little better then the cheap ones they sell at Home Depot but if your happy with the economy stone its probably not worth spending another $20. Btw you can get the 8x2in premium at KnifeCenter.com for $23 shipped.

The thread linked by fsatsil above is what I posted, after contacting Norton (Saint-Gobain) about differences between the 'Economy' stone and the apparently identical but pricier version, which I assume is the so-called 'Premium' stone, but not the top-of-the-line 'Crystolon' stone (as named). According to what they told me, all of their SiC is 'Crystolon' abrasive. BUT, I'm assuming differences in price may be due to differences in how uniform in size the abrasive might be, or how densely-packed, or binders, or who-knows-what.

I find my economy, crystalon, and India are all very different stones. Personally I don't like the economy stone because its too difficult to produce a quality edge. Doesn't seem to cut clean enough or produce a crisp apex so its used for dirty work. The SiC is probably my favorite for its waterstone like mud and feel but if I want the sharpest edge I use the India.

Thanks to all of you. I very well remember that thread where you contacted SG. That was the reason for my own contact with the company. I don't know if you remember, but we were waiting on more information in regards to the questions that I had about these stones, but they never came.

That thread along with bluntcuts video review on the economy, premium and big ol' stone from another maker were on my mind as I looked at the stone the other day.

I should have said in the beginning that I figure that I could find the premium stone for less money online, but I wanted to support the local store, so long as I wasn't being taken for a ride.

Okay, so crystalon is better and so is their India (India is AlumOx right?) stone? I guess it would be silly to buy the intermediate stone when I could get a better one. I believe the premium is pre-oil filled. My econo stone was a sponge (a bleeding sponge), and I hated it for that reason until I applied some petroleum jelly (thanks for the tip). That being the case, I think I'll skip the premium and look for an 8" crystalon and India.

I also find my edges a bit ragged fresh off the economy, but it works for my cheapies that I abuse.

Thanks again for the info. Still open to others experiences. :)
