I have been throwing cheap little knives, about
8" total length
4" blade
7.5oz

I have been playing more with spikes now, and am curious as to the size of nail I should go to. I found 9-10" nails with about the same weight, but how would that effect my throwing distance?

I throw with the blade in my hands, about 3-4 spins(I know it's too many), and about 20-25 feet.

The real advantage to spikes are the sheer versatility in the number of ways to throw them. I can routinely stretch my half turns from 5 feet to 15 easily by changing grip, stance, or even just specific position of the grip.

Anyhow...the length can generally alter the length of each spin...more specifically each turn will take more distance because the radius of spin will be longer. Not too much longer if they're not much longer than knives you routinely throw, but understand that many knives have a different feel and take to a different grip form than spikes do.

Start with half turn and move back, try to be as consistent as possible. You'll find out how it affects you directly.

Good luck and have fun throwing spikes!

Addendum...as far as the size of the spikes...when I decided to give it a whirl, I made a set of 9" long, 3/8" thick spikes. They aren't really long range throwers but they can stretch out there a ways. It might be easier to go to a 10-12" spike a bit thicker than 3/8" because you can watch the spin a little easier and it's easier to throw slow. I'm not an expert at all, just thought I'd try to jump in.
