I remember hearing years ago of guys somehow slicking up the blade pivot on the 110 that enabled the too flick open with just a motion of the wrist. I haven't been able to find any info on how it was done. Any leads would be great. I would also love to see any mod you guys have done.

My understanding is that years ago the spring was lighter and that enabled the knife to opened easily via inertia. At some point this was changed for a heavier spring that prevents this. I don't know if the upgraded spring was used to keep that from happening or was just part of ongoing changes through the life-cycle of a product. Now you pretty much need an aftermarket thumb-stud to open quickly. Although people who practice with the 110 can open it one handed with no stud, I am not sure how quickly though.

Beginning with the 2 Dot 110s, the shape of the tang was changed in a way that created increased pressure on the lockbar/spring mechanism as the knife was opened. This created what C J Buck described as "a bias to closure" and essentially eliminated flicking the knife open. The change was in the shape of the tang, not a heavier spring. There is a description of this design change and its effects in the December 2013 BCCI Newsletter.

When I was young and stupid, I would take a brand new 110 and fling it against the big elm tree in our from yard. That would knock the bolster just loose enough to let me one had fling it open. I did this with (2) 110's from the late 80's. I would never do that now a days.

 Yikes!

Well, we live and learn.

In the early generations the knife could, with a lot of force, be wrist flicked open. This was also the cause of a lot of tennis elbow or wrist.

My first 110 is now so worn I can open it by pushing on the blade where a thumb stud would go as if it had one, but for the new one I still haven't finished making more carry-friendly, I put a Kwik thumb stud on it. The other modification is a pocket clip I just haven't gotten around to installing. I have seen newer 110's loosened up enough to flick, but it takes so much loosening it becomes dangerous. You can also pinch the blade and "drop" the knife open one-handed. Not sure if this works brand new or not though, but I'd guess you can.

Just buy the 110 that has been converted to auto. ;). When I saw that thing, I started drooling. Classic 110 style, modern fast open. I really want one.

I added thumbstuds to my 110's and 112. Very handy mod and I don't think It detracts from the appearance of the knife

heck I used to pinch the blade and flick the handle down to open it ...
it is still possible to make em easer to open with a flick
jest more work then it used to be...
but today I like every one else jest really want that thumb stud ...
sadly cut my thumb in half and cant thumb one open any longer
and while I can eat with chop sticks left handed I cant thumb open my eleven zero as a south paw... :(

I have been opening and closing my 110's with one hand for forever.

On a brand new one, use couple drops 3n1 oil and work the blade back and forth for a while.

Just a matter of getting used to doing it.

But wouldn't try it with an oily blade that will slip out of your hand.

Never been bit by one.
