So I've got a few things going on at the moment, a smarter person might stretch them out a bit, but I like to tear into my goodies like a hungry bear wherever possible,

So along with the box O' goodies outdoorsfan has sent out, he also sent my his JK Kentucky Fieldmate to try out, (thanks Sean, I needed another knife tow ant like a hole in the head, but I did ask for it :p) designed by one KY Turkey.

knife specs:
Kentucky Fieldmate (kyturkey design) 6" overall, with a 2 1/2" blade, 7/8" tall, and 3/32" thick. $145.00

(there is a Jk knife in that picture, I promise)
outdoorsfan suggested I use it since it was in it's namesake state, so while my son ate his breakfast and the rest of the house slept I slipped out to try to do just that.

All this goodies talk has had me looking through my hiking bag again and re-assessing, I found this cheap-ish magnesium based striker thing that I'm sure you've all seen before, anyway I wanted to see how it worked as a firesteel, as opposed to a firesteel or a flint and steel which have been my standard kit for a while (other then a lighter, whcih i find doesn't make as hot of a spark or initial fire ).

Here's what all else i brought

you can tell i don't get out much atm because I got all excited, attached my new outdoorsfan made lanyard, and brought this to

I've managed to fit a bunch in this little bag but essential there are three parts, the silver tin is my fire stuff, the modern looking thing my medical kit (and emergency fishing kit :D) and the leather pouch a friend of mine made a while ago has a sharpening stone sowing kit and other small tools etc

Anyone know what this is?

Because it works pretty well in a fire bundle, not hard to find other stuff this time of year of course, and the weather is fairly pleasant atm as well

Added some char cloth as well

On the way back out

What I learned:
1. I need a KY fieldmate (it's a big awkward in the kitchen because it's blade is outsized my most task there, but for EDC, WOW:eek:)
2. I need to make more charcloth
3. I should store more batteries so i don't get stuck using my phone as a camera when I get the chance

thanks all,

Have fun

I wish I had all that beauty in my back yard.

Cool! I have a KFM - It does make a great smaller knife.

Mine was done in maple burl -
