Managed to to get out this weekend for a overnighter with my daughter. She's only been bugging me for the past two years to take her out on a backpacking trip. Weather wasn't the greatest, but we made due. Found a place not too far away that allowed random camping, packed up our gear, grabbed the mutt, and headed out.

Start of the trailhead, she found a bunch of four- and five-leaf clovers, gotta be a good omen, right?

Less than a mile down the trail, met up with the river. Perfect, not too far, no time for complaining. :D Let her scout out a place to pitch the tent.

Found a nice log to set up our camp, then let her deal with the tent.

Success!

Afterwards, I let her take a break, while I set up our sitting area. She wanted to whittle, so she grabbed some sticks and worked on her knife skills. I grabbed some poles for the tarp and set to work before the rain came in.

More knife skills:

Her mini spatula.

Next came fire duty. We gathered up some branches to start, and found some birch bark for tinder. I made some shavings, and let her start it up.

Lil' pyro in action:

I got to work bucking up some logs for the night:

Good start for the night.

...and thats when I noticed my front screw was missing. Thought I put thread lock on them? A quick scan of the area proved fruitless. Scales were still on tight, so went on splitting wood.

Evening brought some more carving time. We both wanted to try out spoons, so brought out the tools:

Roughed out a couple of blanks with the 4:

Awesome trip man! It's great to get the kids out and teach them about the outdoors really cool.

...carving continued...

She couldn't really get the hang of the crooked knife, so she wanted to try her hand at burning out the bowl with a coal.

Woke up the next morning to a blanket of fog. Warmed up with coffee, hot chocolate, and pancakes.

Sun came and started burning away the fog. Finished up our spoons from the night before.

(Didn't take a pic of hers. She wanted to take it home and sand it down first... )

Afternoon spent playing with the dog, eating lunch, and exploring the river.

Very proud of her, she handled herself like a pro. Peed in the woods no problem, explored by herself, safe with the knives, wasn't afraid of the dark (even though she didn't realize how DARK it gets in the middle of nowhere). I asked her if she'd go out again, her expression says it all:

Thanks for looking!

Awesome stuff man. Pretty dang cool camp site too. Looks like the kiddo had a blast.

Do you like the liners on the 4? I should do that to mine.

Thanks for taking the time to post and share what looked like a Great weekend and quality time spent with your daughter and the dog

Thanks man. In truth it was kinda weird; even though it was a short walk down an old ATV trail to the river, there were no signs of a previous campsite. Almost always in areas like this there are huge overflowing campfire rings and old beer cans littering the area. A pristine area like this is almost non-existent. Score for us

...and how do you NOT have liners?? I've seen pics of your ginormous mitts you call hands :D. Personally I love them; they seem to fill out the handle just enough for me to get a rock solid grip on them. No excess hand fatigue so far. Highly recommend it.

Thanks Bravo. Had a great time for sure. I really need to force myself to take the time off and do this some more.

That's what it's all about.

Outstanding! People are always concerned about how they should raise a kid and what the future will bring. Well folks, this is an exceptional example of what to do in order to mitigate those concerns. Good job A Aikiguy .

Thanks DJ. That means a lot to me. I'm always down on myself a bit that I don't get her out and away from the city as often as I should. I recently read that you only get 18 summers with your kid. That realization (coupled with the fact she's already 10) really seemed to hit home with me. I'm trying to make sure we do one or two things per year that'll really impact her later on. Hopefully this is one of them. Thanks again!

Way to go Aikiguy. The skills she's building will also build confidence in herself. She'll need it to get through her tween-teen years. The added bonus is that probably not much (or anything) will ever replace the memory of time spent with Dad.

Very cool man looks like you both had fun!

I'll nvr forget my first camp out with my dad I'm sure she won't either

Thanks for sharing your trip. Beautiful place and good times.

When she gets older she might not remember what she got for her birthday, for Christmas, etc. this year but she'll remember that trip.

Ugh, forget about her, I need to build up my confidence to get me thru her teen years :D. Thanks man.

Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it. Good times for sure.

What a fantastic trip! Thanks for taking the time to give us all a glimpse.

You win major dad points, looks like your girl had an amazing time. Both of my munchkins are coming to an age that I should start planning some trips and bringing them along.
