Quick question about award winning custom knives.

I did a quick search but came up empty, I hope this hasn't been discussed before (and I really hope I haven't joined in if it has been discussed). I was reading Blade and looking at Blade Show winners and started wondering- is there any testing done to see if the entered knives can actually cut? I have received knives with great grind lines, great finish, and no discernible edge. I would hope that award winning knives such as hunters would at least get a fingernail test to see if it bites, but something tells me that the collect and save crowd would be less than appreciative if their potential knife had cut paper or other media. As I've never even been to a show (nor are likely to attend in who knows how long), I have no knowledge in this area.

Again if this is an exhausted topic I apologize- bad night and brain is misfiring.

Short answer: No.

No actual testing is preformed. The entries are judged solely by design and feel.

Assumptions of hardness and bevel sharpness are given. Any *real* testing would invariably scar blades from mint condition.

I can't remember which thread(s), but it was discussed. Probably an impetus as to why cutting competitions were formed.

(Correct me if I'm wrong)

Warning.
I tried to read that thread you linked to Charles, and one page in it turns into nothing more than bickering, worse than me and my brother when we were 6 and 9. Until that point it was quite interesting, especially to someone like me, who hasn't been out much in the knife collecting world. But seeing as the people bickering were knife collecters, dealers, and makers, threads like that turn people like me off of the knife collecting world.

You'd think full grown men, and knife people nonetheless, would be just a wee bit mature.

The subject is actually quite interesting, and would be nice to discuss, not bicker.

A hobby(or career) that requires passion, money and knowledge in equal proportions is bound to bring out high spirits and tempers. You may very well be ill suited to the knife collecting world, it isn't nor should it be, for everyone.

Why not giva guy abreak? Children collect knives, as well as grandmas. There's room for everyone :)

Sorry Stephen, just showing that the subject has been covered in the past.

Don't let that thread scare you off, there's a lot of great information on this forum.

Take care

Charles
