quick question about blade centering

My blade is off center on my new mini-grip. Does it really matter? I have heard it can cause bushing wear. Should I send it back or not worry about it?

If it ain't rubbin, it ain't nuthin.

Seriously though, don't worry about it unless it effects the operation.

I have the same problem with a Spyderco Resilience and when I adjust the pivot screw so that the blade is centered in the handle then I have blade wobble. So good question. Does it cause bushing
wear? Do I send it back to Spyderco as the knife has never been used, or if it isn't rubbing don't worry about it?

If it's not rubbing and the lockup is solid then I don't worry about it.

As far as it prematurely wearing out the bushing's I really can't say. I have a liner lock that the blade has been slightly off center on since I got it about 15 years ago and it's still smooth as the day I got it so I don't think you really have to worry.

Bottom line though, if it really bothers you send it back and have them fix it.

One thing you cam do going forward is ask the dealer to check the blade centering before they send it to you. Every major dealer I've ever asked to do this did so no problem so that might help in the future.

Best of luck.

Mess around with the pivot a little. If that doesn't work, send it in to Benchmade. I had a Mini Grip with an uncentered blade, sent it in, and Benchmade fixed it.

Slightly loosen the first cover screw below the pivot screw. Adjust the blade centering with the pivot screw and when you have it where you want it, retighten the cover screw below the pivot pin. It works for me most of the time.

I dont really think you have to worry about premature wear of any of the parts from a slightly off centered blade. The real question is how much does it bother you that its not centered. From a functional standpoint there is very little need if any for a completely centered blade in the closed position. I however am OCD to a fault and the smallest nit I can pick drives me mad. But if its not eating at you and the blade isnt rubbing then I dont think its doing any real harm. And I would be willing to bet with a little finesse it can be straightened out.

get it replaced through Benchmade. You can adjust the blade centering through tightening the pivot.... Unless you want a stiff action on the flip, which defeats half of the reason axis locks are awesome! BTW make sure to not over tighten the frame screws, this will also effect performance in my experience.

My HK Ally had this problem, but way, way worse - the blade ground up against the inside of the frame. No pivot pin or any way to adjust it. :thumbdn: Gave it away to someone who wouldn't care.

If the pivot tension is adjusted properly and it's still off center, it's just cosmetic. The blade could be slightly warped somewhere causing it to look off center. It won't cause pivot wear if it's adjusted properly at the pivot. If it bothers you send it in, but if it's sharp, it's straight and is adjusted properly just use it hard. Knives are replaceable.
