Why do all Spydercos with carbon fiber handles have that checkerboard pattern? Is it an intrinsic property of the carbon fiber or is something Sal and Co. intentionally incorporate?

It because of the type of carbon fiber material used for the scales. There also are other types, typically though you'll find weave, or uni-directional (basically all the strands going in one direction) The weave looks cooler, and in most applications is stronger.

there are variations and different types, weights, etc

They don't. All have a woven pattern, but on some it's a square weave while on others it's rectangular.

the pattern is created anytime you use carbon fiber weave, albeit the weave pattern can vary. Real carbon fiber as it is used on race cars, bikes, etc... knives too... will always have some sort of pattern to it, just the nature of the beast, and looks cool to boot!

Almost everything one might be interested to know about CF. I find that it looks cheesy as can be when used inside some cars (liberally as in dash, door panels, shift knobs, pilars, etc.) However, when used for knife handles, it looks so much more beautiful. A little goes a LONG way.

Wow Deacon those are some very beautiful pics! What models are in picture 2 and 3 from the top? Also is it just the way the lights hitting the blades or did you give them a little extra polish? thanks.

#2 is a LH PE CF Civilian and #3 is a C22 CF Walker. The CF Walkers came with two different finishes, glossy and matte. The one in that photo is matte. As for the blades, just wiped them down with a dry rag.
