Quick question on the Scallion

I just bought a Kershaw Scallion yesterday and was wondering what the best way to store it is? Should I keep it stored open or closed? I'm kinda confused as to how the speedsafe mechanism works as well. Is there a spring in it? Or is it just that torsion bar I keep hearing about? If I store it closed/folded, it's not going to make whatever helps open the knife wear out quicker, is it? I'd appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!

Storing them closed should not be a problem. I store my chive in the closed position and it has not affected at all the speed at which it opens.

I've not taken mine apart so I couldn't tell you what exactly the mechanism looks like or how it functions.

Their will probably be differing points of view on this. IMHO, if you are going to put any Speed-Safe knife into long-term storage, you're probably better leaving the blade open, since all load is off the spring.

For average day to day usage, I really don't think it makes much difference, as a practical matter. The torsion spring can always be replaced fairly easily if it needs to be. Also, it's under warranty and I think Kershaw will stand behind it. They have put alot of effort and capital into promoting the Speed-Safe device.

BTW, the torsion bar is just a very simple L-shaped spring that helps kick open the blade once you get it starting. It's really a very simple device.

Enjoy your new blade.:)

This thread has a pic of a disassembled chive that T. Erdelyi did. Doesn't really show how it works, but it's a good view of the insides.

I just took apart my Scallion about a hour ago to clean some crud out of the pivot area because it felt funny. The whole thing is actually a heck of a lot simpler than I thought. Thanks again for the help guys, I appreciate it!
