A thread in the Spyderco forum about Cerakote finishing got me thinking about having my handgun refinished with this method. My question is...

Can I send my frame, which has a serial number on it, be sent to a refinisher even though the refinisher does not have an FFL?

i read a discussion about this somewhere...i'm pretty sure the answer is no...you can't even send a stock to someone to refinish...someone else correct or elaborate...

I'm under the assumption that as long as a serial number is present it can not be handled by anyone unless they have an FFL. The key word here is "serial number".

Finishing stocks should be permissible as no serial number is present.

...negative. stock refinishing is a "common task" that if not done by yourself must be done by a ffl gunsmith. stupid; yes because it's just freakin wood, but that how it is...

We have some really F****d up Gun laws. I live in Mass and some places wont even ship certain holsters and stuff here. Its ridiculous

Are you saying this is a Federal law?

Thanks for the info. looks like I will have to wait for this individual to get his FFL before I give him my business in regards to guns. Knives on the other hand.......:)

Unless the laws have radically changed since I was working in the gun store, and they may have, the only item that needed to be transferred by FFL was the part of the gun with the serial number on it, of course, typically that would be the receiver. All other parts of the gun were just that, parts.

I cannot claim to have kept up with the current laws so certainly don't take this as gospel. If it isn't true anymore than we have certainly screwed things up more than was necessary but what kind of a surprise would that be.

You should only need FFL if its the receiver. But if you ship it to the manufacturer when they ship it back you dont need FFL because you already own it. I HATE the gun laws. :(

yep. you can research it to confirm.

and yes, you can buy/sell/ship any part of a gun except the part that has the serial #, which has to be handled by a FFL type.

so i can buy a wood stock from you, no prob. but i cannot hire you to refinish it (unless you're a manufacturer FFL). that's wacked.

but my question is, what about older rifles that do not have a serial # on it? gotta look up that one...

Ken C. Look up a Brownells catalog or their website. They sell some neat products with which you can do a DIY refinishing job. I understand it takes a bit of patience and a warm oven for the baking, but some of my customers have shown me some nifty refinish jobs they've done. I haven't personally tried the products so that's as far as my knowledge goes.
