Quick question reguarding a GEC # 48

That one wont pinch grip to good. The buckeye trapper will a little better but still isn't ideal. They have a low pull weight just not much to grab except the nail nicks.

I don't have one of my western trappers in front of me right now but do have a #48 jack here (same clip blade but with a smaller pen blade instead of the spey blade). I wouldn't call the 2 blade models as being easy to pinch open. I can do it on mine because of the patina and the pen blade being shorter but doubt it will work on the 2 blade models. To be honest, I would only describe the single blade models with the big clip blade as being pinchable.

I just tried my 2010 #48 single blade and it pinches open very easily using the place on the blade where the nail nick is (not using the nick that is)
The 2 blade won't.

Hope that helps.

I have the #48 SFO 2 blade in African Blackwood from Collectorknives and I cannot pinch it open.

The Buckeye Trapper's clip is pinchable for the dexterous but probably not what you're liking for. You could always hold out for a single blade to hit the market but very few ever let theirs go. Alternatively, I highly recommend Canal Street's pinch lockback. I got mine new on the exchange for a song and I really like it.

Thanks so much for the quick replies! So far the only mainstream model I have handled that I can pinch open is the Good Ol' Old Timer 940 series. I have had a nasty habbit of biting my nails since I was a Child. I might end up having to goto a blade Expo or somthing to see more models before I bite the bullet on some of the pricier makes/models out there. Here is a few pics of my current rotation of slip joints.

You could always get a knife opener, or "steel thumbnail." GEC sells a "Tube Popper" tool which includes a knife opener. There is a Case branded one, and AG Russell sells several versions of Steel Thumbnail, which are by far the coolest option: http://www.agrussell.com/ag-russell-steel-thumbnail-black-rucarta/p/RUL-OP1BR/

Else only chew 9 out of your 10 nails and reserve one for knife opening. :)

One of the large Case vendors did a run of EZ Open knives in several patterns, with the round notch cut into the handle. You can find them by searching for Case EZ Open. Looks like all they have left are their "numbered and scrolled bolster" versions of them which are a little more expensive.

I find that I can pinch open my Case Sod Buster Jr. in the black synthetic handles with the as-ground SS blade, but my bone-handled versions with smooth blades both require use of a the nail nick.

GEC comes out with EO notches every so often in their product runs. They have some EO #25s coming out soon. Or you can get one of our fine craftsmen here to mod your knife for you.

The Case Russlock is an interesting option. No nail nick at all. It uses a lever to open it, similar to friction folders, for one-handed operation. I have several of them. A little funny looking at first but very functional knives.
