Quick question, what is this?

So, i just bought a Cold Steel Bushman for cheap. Now, i have a question. Is it normal for a knife handle to have some black stuff on it? My verbal arsenal fails me a bit here, because i have no basis of comparison. Easy version: Wipe tissue over area, gets small amount of black stuff on it.

Its gone now, because i wiped it all off (there wasnt much). I just wanna know what it was.

could be a wax suspension buffing compound. could have been an oil. could have been something on a workers fingers while prepping in the warehouse/factory. could have been the pocket gremlin meeting (those guys that dull your knives when youre just carrying it) chuck norris may have thought about it breaking one so it oxidized. um if its the regular version not the pocket bushman, could be something in the coating that in one small spot didnt set right or mix right or get baked on right. but oil is likely

Every so often Lynn Thompson likes to drop a steamer in a box just to make sure their quality control staff are earning their paychecks.

Yeah, just the regular version.

What would oil feel like? What would oxidization be?*
Or do i need to go to engage the pocket gremlins on their own turf?

If its just oil, thatll just wash off, yeah?

*EDIT: Google tells me oxidization = rust. Im not sure its rust, im not seeing any stains. But im no expert, either.

Its probably a bit of the black powdercoat paint that has oxidized. Paint oxidizes, just look at some old cars.

Its really no big deal. Wax the steel with car or paste wax and it'll help keep oxidation away. Besides, the Bushman is meant to take abuse so don't get too caught up by a little oxidation.

Ill be content with that i guess. I figure whatever it is, there wasnt much of it.

If it came, don't sweat it. If you buy a screwdriver and it has a little something on it, wipe off and start driving screws

i was trying to be funny with the chuck norris remark

I know you were - I probably just SUCKED at articulating that. I havent been getting much sleep lately. Stupid kids and their stupid parties! Sorry :)
