My Dad was changing the blade on his edger today when I went for a visit and I scored the old one off of him.
My question is , what sort of steel are these made from ?
I'm somewhat sure it isnt junk steel or the blades wouldnt last long , I was thinking on making a little cleaver out of it.

Thanks in advance ! :D

You never know without testing it,it could be crap or could be high carbon.Try doing a spark test or just do a HT cycle and test with a file. You could also do a destuctive test on a small piece, normalize, heat to non magnetic, quench in water or brine. If you can shatter it like glass it should be hardenable. feel free to correct me here :foot: I'm just thinking out loud

Most edger blades are make to be tough, not sharp..50 carbon content would be the max to expect..30 would be more likely. They don't usually make good blades.I will repeat my mantra again -
"Get a known steel from a reliable supplier, and you will make blades of known qualities with reliable results."

Thanks for the advice ! :)
I have plenty of bar stock , D2 to make from but , there's a certain "coolness factor" in making something usable out of things like a saw blade or what have you.

Allrighty , thx again.
