Quick Question

Does anyone know who is making the S/W folders tang stamped USA? Thanks. David

Since 2004, there have been a couple identified on the forum. All are licenced by Taylor LLC, who has rights to the Schrade names and trademarks. I think I may be missing another one. Someone may correct me.

Bear & Sons (Blue Boxes), Camillus (Plastic Tubes). These two usually look brand new and some have the Everlasting Sharp blade etch.

Unofficially, Great Eastern has recently made some called the Fire and Ice Series. Plans for more higher end knives coming. These Have a Schrade Cut Co stamp.

The strange thing is that Taylor LLC doesn't list Schrade Walden as one of it's brands. Anyway there's an S/W Muskrat on it's way to me so I shall see what it's like and post comments, pics etc. Thanks for your help. David

I think the Schrade Walden's that Taylor LLC licensed were produced roughly between 2004 to 2007 and they are not using that stamp for current production. I also believe the knives marked Schrade Walden that were post 2004... there wasn't intent for potential buyers to believe they were new production. Not directly by Taylor LLC, as their name was printed on the packaging, albeit rather discreetly, but more by some but not all folks who obtained access to them for distribution. This is especially true once the knife was separated from the tube, box etc... I see quite a few for sale by sellers who fell for them thinking they were pre 73.

I'm not sure how the people gained access to sell the Bear and Camillus made knives, which have been prominent on Ebay for quite some time, but many of these secondary sellers are the ones who sell them under the guise of an original Schrade Walden. Sometimes knowingly, sometimes not. I would believe quite a few of them "lost their shorts" on those particular knives.

These marketers are aiming at new collectors. I have seen no Schrade Waldens I would term a replicate, as they made them slightly different than pre 73, and did not use the original Schrade Walden pattern numbers. For myself, they are easy to distinguish from the pre 1973 Schrade Walden knives, at least now.

Very recently have I noticed a particular seller stating "Camillus made Schrade" in their title and description, and it appears to help them sell. I imagine these are of a higher quality that the Chinese made Schrades. In fact, probably a quality knife that I have no desire to collect personally.

This information is fairly old news for many, as it has been discussed ad naseum on this forum, but I think there are enough new readers that may not understand "Schrade Walden", and who can't search old posts, so I think it is worth writing about.

Well, the knife has arrived, but the camera has been dropped and the cost of repair is higher than the cost of a better new camera as it's 3/4 years old.

This is a Schrade Walden Muskrat with amber jigged bone scales, made by one of the US companies under licence from Taylor LLC. The label on the box end says "Schrade Walden Co". One blade is etched "Everlastingly Sharp". Original box. Walk & talk are brilliant and it cuts across an A4 sheet of 80gsm paper without a snag or tear.

BUT...

At some point in time, some joker has had a go re-shaping the bolsters but not the springs so they stick out proud of the bolsters. Pretty amateur job that's only half done and shouldn't have been attempted in the first place. Perhaps it was an attempt to deal with some damage.

Pity. The dark side of the bay.
