Upgraded my sharpening stone holder setup. Pics and comments on a couple useful new tools I ran across.

  1. Tormek rubber work mat. A 21"x13.5" thick rubber mat. Really sticks to work surface. Has 0.5" raised edges to retain small parts and fluids. I've been looking for a high quality work mat like this for a while, for working on small gun parts assemblies, other small parts tasks, and now for sharpening. Really like this one!
  2. DMT Magnabase adapter. An $11 add-on magnet that you can attach to a standard DMT bench stone holder. If you don't have the DMT holder, getting the combined set is cheaper than buying separately. This is a good solution for any metallic plate-based diamond stones (not just DMT). Although as @adamlau pointed out in a PM, if you have a plate based on aluminum, like the Atoma 140, the magnet won't work for those.

What I like about the DMT holder + magnabase adapter for diamond sharpening:
  • Works for any metallic plate diamond sharpener I have, tested with: DMT duosharp/interrupted plates, DMT continuous diasharp plates, Ultrasharp 2-sided plate, and SK11 2-sided plate.
  • Makes swapping stones/sides fast and easy during sharpening. Versus having to keep popping out those little plastic retainer clips on the DMT stone holder. Totally a nice-to-have, but as anybody who has done a lot of swapping stones with those plastic clips knows, the adapter is well worth $11. :)
  • The whole setup is plastic (except the interior magnet portion of the adapter itself--which is covered with a smooth exterior material) so it's easy to use with water, oil, etc., and to rinse off when done.
  • During sharpening, the magnet holds the stones solid. Solid enough that you can flip the entire holder upside down and even with a heavy plate like a DMT EEF, an Ultrasharp , or the large 10" duosharps, they stay put.
