So my mother has been using the hell out of the Ladybug I bought her, and she says she's ready for the "next size up". Technically that's the Dragonfly, right? Thanks and apologies for the simplicity of this question.

better be clear with regard to her needs. if she wants a substitute to her usual cutting, then yes a dragonfly is ok but might be too expensive for a mere substitute. if she has other cutting chores, then recommend a better knife for the task. if she travels to the UK or australia... you get my drift.

I agree. She should choose her knives based on her needs, not because it is the "next size up".

Yea. Her choice in her next knife should be based on what she actually uses her knife for and of course, your local knife laws.

It's mostly opening packages, and she's all of 4'11 so I figured the Dragonfly would be appropriate; but I'm certainly open to any other suggestions in the $75 or less category...

I would recommend a Spyderco Delica FFG. It's a wicked slicer and they have several colors to choose from. They run about $50 - $65 for the most part.

she doesn't open big boxes for a living, does she? even if not, you really beat the crap out of a ladybug. that's like trying to cut with a sharpened key. even a dragonfly is too small to be cutting boxes with longer than a couple of strokes (and i'm a small guy.) maybe a delica vg-10 or those excellent chinese-mades. she might like the 2-inch ambitious: g-10 handles, liner lock, and a sturdy blade.

I think the Dragonfly2 is a superb edc knife. Hardly too small, it feels and cuts much bigger than its 2.25" blade says. I really like them, in fact I have given over 10 of them as gifts.

Its a great knife for small hands and is fine for big hands with its generous choil. Very comfortable.

Yep! I would also go with a Delica 4 (in purple or light blue) with the Full Flat Ground blade. Great little pocket knives...

I got my Dragonfly G10 for around $75. Solid feel and lockup and cuts like crazy. She's bound to like anything you get her, have her browse the Spyderco website and get the one she likes.

The Dragonfly is a great little knife, but the Delica 4 can be had for only a few dollars more. I'd also vote for the Delica. Perhaps even a Native 1...

The dragonfly is a wonderful little knife, I carry one as a backup to one of my larger folders, but overall the delica is just a more useful size.

Go with the delica in a pretty colour. Or the more economic persistence in dull, boring black.

I say...
Dragonfly 2 is a great little knife. But with that you may just have to keep sizing up.

So I say:
Spyderco Delica 4 Purple FFG - Very nice knife.

But for around the same price you can get the same handle material, same lock, and a better steel...

So ultimately I would get her the Spyderco Native in pink.
My mom loves my delica she thinks it's cute and nice. But when I had my native, she was crazy about that little guy lol.

The native fits the hand like a glove, better steel, holds a hell of an edge, and you can use it for EVERYTHING.
