Just a fun post on a short throwing session today. Quick history on the Cold Steel Sure Balance I'm using. I decided to keep one knife (the CS SB) outside all winter since November just stuck in a log in my firewood structure behind my target, to see how it does in any long term cold wet weather for the whole season. So even on nicer days when I bring out other (usually smaller knives) blades I still throw this big boy. Today was really cold, so I just threw it alone one time.

Today the temp was -18 below F, with a -42 windchill temp, so I wasn't planning on any throwing at all, but still had to let the dog out, right? My wife was near the back door when I finally was bringing the dog in, so I decided to throw one time and asked her to snap a couple pics. I had already been out almost 10 mins, and was loose enough to throw, but didn't expect to do any good on just one throw.

Although you can't see in the pics, I have several grooves/channels (boot width) in the snow I've maintained for 6, 8, 10 & 12' distances, so I don't have to relocate/experiment before throwing many knives I know the distances for. That said, yeah I went for the easy half spin at 8', but it was with gloves on (usually throw bare handed), all bundled up and friggen cold. I was happy to just get in my stance, get some decent form, look at the camera and give it a throw. I didn't hit any bullseye, but I wasn't aiming either. Just went for the center of log mass.. Hit it right on Center. Good enough, and time to go back inside... :)

Quick fun with Cold Steel on a real cold day...

Real cool!!! Viper.

I'm obviously a wimp. It was 36 here today but windy and I still chose to throw in the basement. 21 foot range here with a low ceiling so you have to throw pretty hard and flat to get back more than 16 feet. The back stop is three layers of "Buck" wood stove pasteboard boxes. I have a buddy that installs wood stoves so I have him save the boxes.

This shows the edge of several sheets of this super heavy weight pasteboard. One sheet will stop an arrow from my 50 lb bow at 50 feet and three sheets will stop a bolt from a 175lb crossbow at 25ft. It easily stops knives and can be turned around after several hundred throws and the other side used.

I wrap a few unused sheets around and behind to prevent damage and catch misses.

Here is my first attempt at making a throwing video just on a spur of the moment. I had to go out and clean up after the dog, so I thought I'd bring my old cheapie vid camera (DXG-567V) and film while throwing my old reliable and thoroughly frozen CS Sure Balance a few times. Not the best weather day (as usual around here..) but it's 9 degrees ( neg- 5 windchill) and yes snowing again.. lol
So, I was trying to hold the camera with my left hand, (no glove) keep my footing in the snow, (lost my distance grooves lines a couple snow storms ago), so I just thought I'd give it a try. Sorry for the shaky/all over angles, but no image stabilizer and just hand holding tiny camera was bound to happen...
Not the best throwing as well, but it's more about me just shooting a throwing vid for the first time. Bounced a couple throws but ended on a sorta bullseye shot. Glad to, because my camera hand was pretty cold.. Back yard throwing Cold Steel in a little snow storm!
