Hi, i am about to make a leather sheath for my 12" machete, i want it to be black, have a nice vinegaroon ready and i need to know if i should apply the vinegaroon and make all the darkening process and then fold&form the leather or do the sheath and then apply the vinegaroon.

hope you can help me.

Thanks!

I am not an expert but I would say fold and form first. If you dyed first the leather will change color or lighten up around the folds. Also you can die any cuts or edges.

I died the leather first, then washed/rinsed it with baking soda and wet molded it. I was amazed at the black.

This ^^^ You really want to do the vinegaroon first, its so much easier to get all the vinegar out on a flat piece of leather.

I had practice died some small scraps a while ago. I finally did a pocket holster for a buddies Kahr 9mm. No issues with the folds not keeping the color.

The only issue for me was the smell, it was very strong till I washed it, and it fully dried, and I put a bunch of coats of leather treater and atom wax on it.

If you will let the completed sheath dry thoroughly before applying any sealer, you should have no problem with any form of stain or patina. Have done many sheaths and gun leather using vinegaroon with no problems.

thank you all guys, this is what i finally did:
cut, wet fold, apply vinegaroon, then the baking soda twice and then the rest..
