I just wired up my TECO fluxmaster100 VFD inverter and I have a question. When the motor is off there is still power to the inverter and a few lights and the display is on, do you guy's leave it like this all the time or do you unplug it at night?? Just wondering.. BTW thanks to all of the guy's who chimed in to help with the wiring:D . Hopefully the KMG will arrive this week (I'll be throwing big sparks then!!)!!!

I have the 220v going into my garage on a disconnect switch and when I am not using anything I just turn off the disconnect. I have 4 pieces of equipment with freq drives and that is just a waste of electricity.

Hello Rocketmann

I would suggest disconnecting the input power to your VFD when you are done using your grinder. The model that you have is not sealed against dust. A lot of the dust in a typical knifemaker's shop will be conductive. I know one of the other members had his blow up due to the conductive dust just two months ago. It looks like a second member's VFD blew up for the same reason just this last week. As long as power is applied to the VFD, there is a chance that the dust causes a short in the VFD.

The last thing that you want is for it to blow up when no one is around, spit out some flames and setting your shop on fire.

Take car.

I plan to recess the controler in a cabinet with only the face showing and wrap some pantyhose (1 layer) around the air inlets. Hopefully this will fix the dust problem, while still allowing it to cool properly.

Just put in a simple on/off switch in the line going to the VFD...well worth it for safety reasons.

Daniel, That's the problem. This is 220v and I don't know how to wire up a switch that will kill both hot legs at the same time. Home depot dosen't have any 220 switches....

Get a double-pole 220V circuit breaker like the one in your electrical panel. They can be used as switches too. Put it in a box with a front panel so the connections are not exposed. All of this stuff should be available at any hardwares store or Home Depot/Lowes.

Thanks for the ideas, I think that the double pole circuit breaker would work fine. I'l pick one up asap. BTW I see that a large purchase has posted on my mastercard, and that can only mean one thing....MY KMG IS ON THE WAY!!!!!:D :D :D :D

Be damn careful. I didn't insulate my VFD well enough and steel dust got in a BLEW IT UP!!!

Consider yourself warned.
