Quick vid with Chris Reeve discussing lock interface design

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this.

I am only a complete amateur here, but I thought carburizing was heating of the lockbar face? Doesn't CRK do this? I clearly remember them heating the lockbar face with a torch in either the Shop Tour videos or 'The Exquisite Blade'.

I found what Chris said to be informative. However, I found myself leaning forward wishing the guy who made the video would talk without..........long..........pauses.........in.........the...........middle............uhhhhh...........of............a thought...............

There is the problem of discussing 'carburizing/carbonizing' as opposed to 'carbidizing''. I forget which is which, but one involves depositing titanium carbide on the lock face, and the other is essentially heat-treating. The 21s have a heat-treated lock face.

No kidding. I fast forwarded through his mumbo jumbo and the interview was still painful.

Doing a little reading, the 21 lock bars are Carburized (also called Carbonized by some), not Carbidized. So Carburizing is a heat treatment process. Whereas Carbidizing involves applying a molecular layer of titanium carbide.

Aah. That actually makes complete sense. Thanks!

i love Chris. He looks at you like he's calculating how best to fit pieces of your corpse into a woodchipper.

People don't tend to find him warm'N'bubbly I gather, but he's the kind of guy I want designing my knives. Confident and clinical.

Chris is like a lot of other businessmen and businesswomen who are very driven, focused and detail-oriented. I like that about him. I can't say the same for uhhhhhh the uhhhhh interviewer. I am quite happy that you started this thread because it has cleared up a common misnomer about the lock-face of CRK.

I realized after 30 years of him making the knife, and going to these events, I can see why he isn't too thrilled to be interviewed for like the 1 millionth time about his lock design. lol

Still good to watch.

I love watching CR, always serious, precise, and to the point....must explain why he makes such an amazing knife?

Can't argue with the man who understands how these locks work best and has proven that by how well they work on his knives....

Thanks for the Vid.
