I picked up a older japan made tanto voyager with the plastic pocket clip today at a pawn shop

What blade steel was used on these? I've been google searching but just can't seem to nail it down

AUS 8 or 6, VG 1..?

Thanks in advance for the help

Plastic pocket clip dates it to the 90's I would go to http://www.coldsteelforums.com/ and ask over their Also you can down load old catalogs. That might help I carried mine till 2009 when pocket clip finely broke. I don't know what steel was but held edge and sharpned up real nice I put that Vovager thru Hell over the years while trucking . My daughter carries in her purse now

I know VG-1 was only used a couple years around 2006 thur 2009 I carry a X2 Voyager VG-1 I bought 2009 today.

I'm pretty sure the old plastic clip models were AUS-8.

edit: Just checked some old catalogs, and it looks like earlier ones were "400 series," while later ('95 or so) ones appear to have been AUS-8 (it doesn't specifically say, but the only high carbon stainless they list in the 95 catalog is AUS-8) .

Ok thanks for the info guys :)

I didn't even know they used 400 series steel.. I'm hoping its at least AUS 8

I have 1 for sure 400 series I see nothing wrong with it It holds a good edge . I think close to the AUS8

I believe CS used 440A on some of their knives years ago (Pro Lite and others). That's probably what's in your old Voyager. Knowing CS, the heat treat was done as well as it is on their AUS-8 stuff, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

I think that part of the change to 440A had to do with them starting production with Taiwanese makers.

There were a few other Cold Steel knife lines back then (ten years or so ago) that were switched to Taiwan from Japan.

Most of their knife lines that still use Aus-8A are still having the blades made in Japan and assembled/finished in Taiwan.

Going back to the mid-to-late 1990s Voyagers with the integral pocket clip, they should be Aus-8A, but it won't be marked/etched on the blade.

I have large and small tantos from the same era, broke the pocket clips off with a year of buying them by catching them on door frames. I shaved the remaining nub off, the little one rides in my wife's purse now and I modded the big one with a spare CRKT steel pocket clip a few years ago. Both have survived and thrived through nearly 20 years of use and abuse.
