Hello first post so go easy on me,

I have looked around and havent found the search button so if this has been covered pls forgive. I am new to the slipjoint arena and interested in eye brand, the med stockman in stag to be exact. I am wondering how they hold up, are they a working knife? whats the fit and finish like? Really anything you can tell me about them at all.

Thanks in advance,
Triq

Welcome! You'll find LOTS of great info. here, I usually sit back and just read and absorb as much as I can.

IMO eye brand knives are very hard to beat, I really like them...especially the older ones, great steel, and from the ones I've had or seen very good fit and finish too!

I just received my first Eye Brand stockman yesterday in the mail, so I can give you some first impressions. I bought the large stockman with yellow synthetic scales and carbon steel blades. IMO it looks as though it was made in the same factory as some of my Bull Dog Stock knives. It has the same squared bolsters and blade grinds.

It was reasonably sharp out of the box , a few swipes on a ceramic rod had it shaving sharp. The blades are nicely swedged and fitted together when closed, the springs are just right for me. I also like the shield they used on the handle.

Now the bad... there's a noticeable gap where the back springs are fitted together, all three blades have a slight wobble ( which is not that big a deal for me), the fit of the blade back to the springs in the open position is sloppy and some of the edges around the bolster area were left sharp. So In many ways it looks a lot like my 2004 vintage Bull Dog knives, but the fit & finish on this Eye Brand knife looks a little rushed.

I paid $49 with shipping and I would say my Case and Queen stock knives are a better choice.

I think the newer Eyebrand knives lack fit and finish but they have good steel in the blades, especially carbon steel. I bought 2 Congress pen knives from SMK a few months back in carbon steel and they sharpened nicely and very easily on my Norton India Combo stone. One did not have a good snap but it was exceptable. I bought a Sodbuster by Eyebrand about a year of go and the fit and finish was a little sloppy but the carbon steel sharpened up nicely, I don't know about the current stainless steel. Check out Knives Plus website and see what they say about Eyebrand as I agree with what they say. Welcome to forum.

Right now Eye Brand are made in the Frederich Olbertz factory in Solingen. I have a pair of canoes which are great, but need a piece of Durafil as the blade hits the spring when closing. Then I have a stag muskrat which is faultless. One of the best knives in my collection.

I know it doesn't help much, but they do seem to be inconsistent. Many of my knifemates here in the UK rate then in the top 5. So do I (if your lucky enough to get a good one:rolleyes:.)

brought into u.s. about 1933 these were some of the best edge holders in world
built to last & use were coveted by farmers ,ranchers &trappers
until late 90s i could'nt find any blades that held an edge longer
carbon blades produced know are still good users
carbon blades ca'nt be used for prying wo'nt bend will break early henckels were about only thing to hang with them in edge durability
of course remington [1920 to 1940] would cut with anything in world at that time. i.m.o.

Thanks for the info gentlemen, so what in your opinion would be one of the best bang for the bucks on the market at this time? I do realize that this may be a "How long is a piece of string?" question but i'm really looking for a very rugged working knife that is still pretty. I want carbon steel blades, stag scales, probably in the med to large stockman configuration. Thanks for all the help guys.

i have about 10 Eyebrand knives. most are 'older' ones with black composition handles, all bought on ebay, all excellent F'nF.
my BEST has been my EDC for about 3 years, a 4 5/8" stag handled 2 blade Jack, secondary is a saw blade, model 99S-DS. main is etched "Carl Schlieper/Hammered Forged/Solingen Germany". this is a GREAT 'outdoors' EDC; excellent edge holding, tough, attractive, excellent in-hand feel. this was bought from an online dealer about 3 years ago, $67.
of my 2500+ knives, this really is one of the best users i have ever tried out.
if you can find this model, esp. if one from a few years back, i highly recommend it.
i have never tried any of the ones with stainless blades and often wonder if all of current Eyebrand really are still 100% made in Germany.
