Hi Gents

I was asked if I could make a rendition of the Bowie carried by Tom Selleck in the film Quigley Down Under. The original was made by the knife maker Chuck Staple who sadly passed away in 2016. The knife I have made has a blade of W-1 just shy of 220mm long, 40mm wide, 5mm thick on the spine, the overall length of the knife is 345mm. I've left the flats rough forged and given the blade a forced acid etched patina. The hand guard and butt cap are made from 316 stainless steel and have been heat coloured to give them a nickel silverish look. The sheath has a leather body which is wrapped in raw hide, embellished with brass diamond studs and brass cones filled with horse hair. The first set of pic's are the original knives and sheath made by Chuck Staple.
All comments and questions very welcome.

Cheers

Steve

Nice one, man. That could easily be mistaken for the original, with perhaps the only issue being your iteration wasmuch better fit and finish. ;)

Can't believe how you managed to find a piece of stag that matches so well! That had to take a lot of digging...

Thanks for your comments fellas. There's a company in Scotland Matt called Highland Horn. I bought several pieces of Sambar Stag from them 5 or 6 years back, it may be even longer. It included rolls as well as tines. I've been steadily going through that supply making the handles for these Bowies and the mountain man style folders. The match with the original was really lucky.

Steve I would love to get to Blade next year, it just depends on work loads. Being the kind hearted guy that I am I may even bring my wife and treat her to three days of knives, knives and more knives. She'll be beside herself with excitement. The only problem will be breaking it to our son that I'm taking his mother and not him. He came with me in 2016 and now looks on it as a bit of a lads holiday.
