:thumbup:I have been gifted with a R-5.
I really see that Holly "gets" the soul and spirit of the knives HI produces. Holly has always been supportive of my hobbies, passions and explorations. I pray I've reciprocated.
She is above all a person that grasps quality. We have seen many kinds of edged weapons come and go. I played heavy fighter in the SCA when we still used freon can helms and carpet armour, I have owned many an edge along the way.
Longwinded holiday speach aside, the R-5 is one sexy date.
The full tang is full width,(5mm), to the pommel. A heavy handle, yet the feeling is solid and not overpowering. The black horn handle is sticky when wet with water and bloody juice from a roast. I find this helpful in controlling the blade.
I searched the archives in my own lazy fashion and didn't fine a whole lot on the R-5. I see the similarity to my Sarge R-6. I don't know if the designer is the same, yet they both have their stuff right on.
I made a pot of chilli with it, chopped onions, peppers, garlic and sliced 3 lbs. of beef strip into cubes. Chopped 1/2 bushel of fresh egg tomatoes and got a nice patina to boot for my trouble. Kind of clumsily chopped fresh herbs for the pot.
Peeled and cubed 10 lbs. of fresh Russet potatoes, chopped mushrooms and cut a small smoked venison roast and 4 med. sweet onions for morning hash with bacon fat fried eggs.
and...
cut 12 feet of 12 gauge copper wire into 5 inch pieces.
...used the small sharp half inch section near the small choil to experiment with my magnesium bar and ferrocerium rod to start 3 seperate fires with damp tinder, no real dulling, just a roughening of the edge.
...chopped hardwood that is driftwood to test the edge, there was no edge rolling and the edge seemed to be hard from choil along the entire edge, the clip and then it got soft...,
I used this knife as a cutting tool to make 10 medicine pouches and a knife case for itself out of 8-9 oz moccasin deer leather.
I love it's belly and will be skinning with it when the chance presents .
Longwind done for now, wow whatta blade.
