I'm looking for some information. I bought a small (4") hunter in ats-34 with beautiful stag scales. The clerk at the shop said it was made by Ray Cover, but I can't find anything online about his knives. I did find some info about an engraver by the same name.
Like I said, I've already bought the knife, but if anybody can tell me anything about this maker, I'd be appreciative.

Fred

The engraver is Ray Cover Jr., the makers son. Ray makes decent "using knives" for the most part, but his son is noted as an exquisite knife engraver. Contact info is:
Ray A Cover
Route 1, Box 194
Mineral Point, MO 63660
Phone 314-749-3783
According to Knives 2003, he is a part-time maker.

I don't know about "decent using knives," IMO Cover Sr. makes very nice traditional slipjoints that are underpriced for what you're getting.

I'm with 92degrees on this one. Ray Cover makes great stuff, at prices about half what others charge. I really don't know how he does it either.

Hi Steve C.

Im with 92 degrees and Danbo. How many of Ray Cover Sr.'s knives have you owned or handled?

His work is definetly an excellent value of for the money.

I have a Ray Cover Sr. stag handled drop point hunter that is impeccable. First class. And his son is a great guy too.

Thanks for all the info, guys. Like I said, the knife is beautiful, I just couldn't find anything about tha maker online. I bought it to use, but the fact that it's so well crafted doesn't hurt!

Ok, more Ray Cover Sr. endorsement here. What you usually find on a Ray Cover Sr. knife, is near perfect grinding, and great fit and finish. All blades are sent to Paul Bos(which is a selling point all by itself), and backsprings that border on bank vault. No wimpy springs on Cover folders. All this for about half what other folder makers charge.

What I meant by that was in no way to "slander" Mr. Cover as was interpreted. I have handled a few at shows and yes, the work is nice. Warren Osborne nice, Ken Steigerwalt nice, Minnick nice, no not THAT nice! But as we all know, nowhere near the price either. I would feel comfortable USING a Ray Cover knife every day. Would I use a knife engraved by his son every day...NOT ON YOUR LIFE! I was just trying to point out (awkwardly I admit:footinmou ) that the son's engraving is in such high demand and so pricey that the two are about as far away on the spectrum of embellishment that you can get. Nothing wrong with that, the world needs both. After all the quote from Knives 2003 is "High tech working straight knives and folders in traditional patterns". Since Mr. Cover submitted those words himself, I respectfully say BITE ME!:D

I've been collecting customs for a few years and I own several Ray Cover knives and have more on the way. I have to say....Ray's quality and prices have mostly made me a Ray Cover collector as far as custom knives go. I've seen customs at two or three times the price that don't compare. I have some in bone, pearl and stag and marvel at the craftsmanship every time I pick one up. I also have one of Jeff's knives and more on the way. Anyone wanting a high-quality, precision made custom knife should look for a Ray Cover knife. If anyone else makes knives as well in the same price range please name them.

Yep, those pics were taken on a good day, when my digital camera was feeling good. :)

Mongo, I almost forgot how nice that big slipjoint was. Thanks. :)

Stag content, you know I'm into that. I talk to quite a few makers and Ray's name has come up more than once. Great to see the pictures,
thanks.

Damn, Lifter, that is a nice knife. Don't let Greg (GK2410) see that.
