Sad news of the passing of an actor who showed good looks were not as important as talent to be a success:

Karl Malden, the Academy Award-winning actor whose intelligent characterizations on stage, screen and television made him a star despite his plain looks, died Wednesday, his family said. He was 97.

Malden died of natural causes surrounded by his family at his Brentwood home, they told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. He served as the academy's president from 1989-92.

"Karl lived a rich, full life," Academy president Sid Ganis said. "He has the greatest and most loving family; a career that has spanned the spectrum of the arts from theater to film and television, to some very famous commercial work."

I remember him from the tv 1970's show "The Streets of San Francisco," which was my late mother's favourite program.

R.I.P. Mr Malden.

Malden came to my attention when I saw him in "Patton".

He was a fine actor and he appearred to have been one of the truly upstanding people of the acting community.

Malden certainly was a fine actor and a general stand-up guy.

Here's a little-known fact about him: He was a long-time (volunteer) member of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, the committee that decides what designs are to be put on postage stamps sold by the US Postal Service.

Karl Malden was a good guy, and a fantastic actor...My favorite movie that he was in was "On the Waterfront"...He played the role of the priest, very well. He was also VERY good in "A Streetcar Named Desire".

Another tidbit about him is that he & his wife were married for 70 years!...For "Hollywood", that's pretty much as good as it gets.

RIP, "Karl".

I have been calling him old potato nose since I was a kid watching the streets of san fransisco .Loved him as an actor but he must have done a fair bit of drinkin an scrappin back in the day with that shnoozel. But some of the best writers and actors have been known to tip a glass.
Holleywood needs more plain character actors that look normal like him. Seeing all the pretty perfect people in rugged roles gets my goat sometimes. Leo in titanic.....jeez read the plot and he was supposed to be this rugged fisherman/longshoreman/sailor with tons of life experience. Looked more like a soft handed schoolboy.

RIP Mr. Malden.

Gee, I wonder if BF member KarlMaldensNose is gonna comment here...

I guess I'll always remember him in Nevada Smith with McQueen.

He gave a whole depth of charater to Tom Fitch.

Nice to see the outpouring as I always liked his acting. But he died last July. And this thread dates from then.

Yeah, but I'm still pretty disappointed that KarlMaldensNose hasn't chimed in here.
