(CNN) -- Actor Peter Falk, who rose to fame on a shambling manner and a rumpled raincoat as the TV detective Lt. Columbo, has died. He was 83.

Falk died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home Thursday evening, according to a statement released by his friend, attorney Larry Larson. The cause of death was not released.

Though he was a renowned movie and stage actor -- he earned two Oscar nominations in the early '60s and won an Obie (an off-Broadway honor) for his performance in Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" -- he is best remembered for the polite, raincoat-wearing, Peugeot-driving Los Angeles police detective who always wanted to know "just one more thing."

That line -- which usually meant that the seemingly absent-minded detective was about to outwit his perfect-crime-committing suspects -- became so popular that Falk used it as the title of his memoir........................

RIP, indeed. What an actor.

And ... a 'regular' guy. Met him in SoCal when I was in college -- open, genuine, and generous with his time. What a guy.

I remember him in Goodyear Playhouse or Alcoa hour. It was a classic as Peter as a tomato farmer rushing to an early market to get premium prices for his early crop.:)

Along the way he encountered a woman giving birth. She begged for help & he was reminding her of his haste to really get a good price.

The story was aptly named " the price of tomatos".

A really great actor, never knew him to be in anything that did not make you smile or laugh . . . .
R.I.P. Mr. Falk, thank you for all the great memories you gave me thru the years. . . . .
Be safe.

Great actor, and comedian. One of my favorite movies, The In-Laws, could not have been nearly as funny with anyone else.

You know, I'm such a great driver, it's incomprehensible that they took my license away.

He also made the movie Roommates. No slight towards DB Sweeney, but it wouldn't have been good without Peter Falk.
