R J Martin Kozuka Question

I just received an R. J. Martin Kozuka with both a neck sheath and clip sheath. I have a question about the latter: When the sheath is clipped to my pocket, or inside my waistband, the blade fit is easily tight enough to dislodge the sheath from its clipped-in position as the knife is drawn. What good is fixed blade if you have to use two hands, one to hold the sheath in place, and one on the knife? The clip spring tension is much lighter then a typical folder's pocket clip, and both sheaths have a rather tight fit with the magnets and friction from the wood lining. Will this friction loosen up after a while, or will I always need two hands to draw the blade?

On the plus side, I had a Hartsfield blade a few years ago. This Martin Kozuka is easily twice the knife for half the $$$.

With my kozuka the knife could be inserted into either end of the sheath. Turn the sheath around so the clip will not release.

I think the idea is to wear the clip sheath in conjunction with a belt. The belt should hold the sheath in place when the knife is drawn. Were you using a belt?

Thanks for the replies. I don't usually wear a belt. I wanted to just clip the sheath inside my waistband, but I don't think this will work out. Guess I'll have to adopt a new dress code. I understand that the sheath can be used from either end, but without a belt, that feature seems moot.

RJ's work is first class - I own several of his knives. The belt sheath on my Kozuka appears to be made for the knife to be placed in the sheath from one direction. That is - it follows the blade profile with the sheath being wider for the top of the blade. No problem. Hope this helps.

Rick: I have yet to find a clip that will grip the thin cloth in a pants pocket sufficiently to retain the sheath when the knife is drawn. However, there are ways around that-they just require a different sheath-your "neck sheath", actually

Use the neck sheath, and loop the chain/cord around your belt loop. Adjust the length so that the sheath bottoms out in your pocket. When you draw the knife and sheath out, the sheath will release AFTER the blade is out of your pocket (a darn good thing!)

Good Luck

I'm working on a clip with rubber on the inside of the clip. Hopefully in the future I'll have a rubber covered clip. Holds on pants well from my tests so far. Try cementing rubber on the inside of the clip.

Alrightythen! Following Mr. Martin's advice, I replaced the chain on the neck sheath with a short cord, which has a small, spring loaded clasp on the end. The clasp clips to my belt loop (BTW, the little clasp provides a handy place to attach a Photon light as well). This works great. The sheathed knife fits perfectly along the outer edge of my front pocket, much like a long, slim folder, with about two inches of handle sticking out; just enough to grab firmly. I'm all set. I don't know how some of you guys can stand having 4 ½ oz. hanging around your neck, it gets on my nerves. This pocket carry method is much easier for me. The only drawback is that you can only access the knife with one hand...oh, and ya gotta have pants on too. I guess I can live with that.

Thanks to all who offered advice. It's not too surprising that the man who made the knife would know exactly how to carry it.

Rick: Glad to hear of your elegant solution to your dilemma! I'm happy that I could help.

Stay Sharp,

RJ Martin
