Fedex man came by today and delivered a package containing one of the coolest knives. Mini Kozuka; 6" of razor sharp A2 with green rayskin and traditional Japanese style laquer dipped cord wrapped handle. This is one cool knife! I think Imagonna go cut something. How many others have an RJ Martin knife, and how do you like them? What have you cut with them?

Congratulations. I have visited Mr. Martin's web site many times and admired his work. How long did it take you to get your knife. From where did you order it?

RJ does great work. Just received my talonite Handyman model last evening. Have 5 other Martins of various models and cannot rate RJ high enough in terms of quality, design and customer service. Truly a fantastic maker. Two of his many high points as a maker are, I feel, his amazing grinding ability and his metallurgy skill.

Can't go wrong with a Martinsite knife!

Danbo, I picked up a "Kozuka" at the last ECCKS. I got one with gray rayskin and a sliver dragon menuki. The rare earth magnet sheaths are just too cool. Razor sharp just like you said! So far I haven't sliced anything more challenging than some bread and boxes, but I've only had it for a week. These babies have great penetrating power by the way.

As much as I admire RJ's work, what I think is his most admirable quality is his attitude. Many times over the last 6-8 months, I have emailed him or called him with questions about knifemaking since I have decided to start making knives myself. Not once has he been rude or refused to help with my dumb questions. I know a few makers out there(they will remain nameless) who are too busy to talk to people unless it involves you buying a knife from them. With the backlog that I know RJ has to have, he could have easily and understandably been much more in a hurry to get me off the phone. I appreciate people who are not selfish with their time and experience.

I have a Kozuka with the Americanized Tanto point and black wrap over creamm rayskin. I carry it a god bit and have used it to cut a lot. His sheaths are the BEST, or at least that's what I think. And, as already mentioned, he makes some of the sharpest knives there are. You cannot go wrong with ine of these.

yeah, but how long is his waiting time?

I have looked at his page a hundred times. Les has a knife called the quest that begs to be owned by me but it is not in stock and I hate long waits. In all fairness to les I havent asked what the wait is but I know he is a popular maker. I do have a question though about the handle. From any of you that really use a knife with this type of handle, how awful is it to try and clean. Steve Corkum also has some nice wares but I always wonder how difficult those resin covered wrapped handles are to clean considering all the nooks and cranies.

Guys: Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate them. I'll keep trying to make them even better.
Alex: On my wrapped knives, I have had no trouble cleaning the handles. Simply use an old toothbrush and some liquid soap. Dry with a paper towel. That's it.
If you get a wear spot, which appears a bit dull (grey) you can just apply a bit of WD-40 or touch up with a Sharpie marker.
The knives are really easy to maintain-Tuf Cloth on the blade and in the sheath is really all you need to do.
Although my delivery times are highly variable ( I have some customers approaching 2 years now), I have taken steps to improve this. Being a part-timer makes it difficult to keep my delivery times short-but, I am doing what I can to keep customers informed, etc. So far, I am not aware of anyone who is unhappy.
As to the Vanguard Series, to which the Quest belongs, I will be delivering these to Les on a scheduled basis.

Stay Sharp,

RJ Martin
