I have been after an R.J. Martin Q36 for a while and when a Forum member contacted me with one for sale I was happy to get a hold of it.
Statmonster is a great seller and I appreciate him letting me buy this knife.
I had considered Martin's Devastator model and almost bought one of them (and still might) but this one seems a bit nicer. A month or so ago, I bought a Kershaw Groove for a friend and I thought it was a very nice knife especially for the money and I guess that is what pointed me in this direction.
The Q36 is very impressive in it's build quality and its operation. The fit and finish are very high quality and the blade grind is fantastic. It has a nice hollow grind and a CPMS30V edge that is close to scary sharp.
Martin has used roller thrust bearings in the blade pivot on the knife which makes it very easy to open. There is a little resistance from the ball detent in the lock bar but as soon as you push past it the blade jumps out of the frame as if it were an assisted opener or an auto. In fact to me it feels like the Microtech Terzuola design auto that I have when it opens. Once opened the lockup is rock solid
The handles are seamless and the shape is very ergonomic for my oversized mitts. This one has Carbon fiber scales with Ti bolsters and frame liners. I added a small piece of skate tape to the back edge for a little extra bit of bite in the grip which suits me.
I understand why this knife was the 2007 Blade Show best tactical Knife. It is an excellent design and I think that I will really enjoy this one for a long time.
