I've noticed this manufacturer as sort of in the same league, as say Green River, or maybe Old Hickory, but didn't realize they made, some fixed blades, that were oriented towards outdoors use, with sheaths. I was curious if anybody had any experience with these, utilitarian, but functional looking fixed blades, they are in the same price point, as many other high value knives, like Mora. They even have a take on the Canadian belt knife.

I have two of their Canadian Belt Knives they made for Herter's. They're 30 years old and I love them. I didn't know they were still making knives.

They look like a solid value to my eye, not too much else to choose from in that price range. They remind me (aside from the belt knives that scream D.H Russel) of Green River which of course is sans a sheath or handle. They've been producing cutlery for forever and a day and I've payed no attention to them. They still sell Herter's branded items, on their site, and other places. The MSRP is pretty competitive.

Murphy at one time made knives for Herters and some of the old, new, stock is still available. I have the Canadian Belt knife (Murphy) and use it on a regular basis. I bought it with a fairly decent sheat and use the knife on a fairly regular basis. IMO it is a very good knife; the pattern is my absolute favorite. While it was made with skinning in mind, I find that this blade is quite adept at a variety of tasks and very comfortable to use. I also have the Grohmann - the Murphy is not as fancy but it works just as well and seems to be well made. For the money, the Murphy is a no-brainer.

Hi all,

Tahts, I'm glad to hear you really like the Murphy knife. I have been VERY interested in that pattern as well and I just don't have the money for a Grohmann (number One) Canadian Belt Knife.
I'm hoping to purchase a Murphy Knife in the (hopefully) not too distant future. As you said, "for the money" it appears to be a "no-Brainer".

I'm interested as well, since i've never used a Grohman, but like the design. Can't quite afford one at the moment, as i just ordered a Sargent Model 3, which will get a LOT of use. I might buy a Murphy as a gift for my cousin who's a master hunter, but isn't a knife guy. I think it would work better for him than the old Buck 120 he's been struggling with, (only b/c of length- the 120 is a great all around knife.)
