I have a nice stainless knife with what appears to be scrimshaw on the handle; Blade is etched R. Nelson 272 and the initials on the artwork are "RB".
Anyone know of 'Nelson' as a maker? I bought this knife about 25 years ago.

Welcome to the Forum! Levine's Guide lists Roger S. Nelson of Central Village, Connecticut. His maker's mark is 'R. NELSON'.

RB could be Rick Bowles, a very accomplished scrimshander.Post a photo of the knife and scrimshaw,I'll show it to Rick and see if he recognizes it. If it is his work,it is quite valuable.

I'll print a copy and call Rick tomorrow and ask.Looking at the work, I tend to think it is NOT Rick Bowles.

I left him a message. Haven't heard back yet. I'll call again this morning. He could be traveling.

I heard back from Rick. It is his work. Here is his email back:

Hey Stacy,
Yup...that's mine. I did that for Randall dealer and knife purveyor Doug Kenefick in Danielson Ct. over 27 years ago. Damn, I'm gettin' old!

Wow, thanks, Stacy! Well, I also tracked down an address for Roger Nelson, guess I'll contact him next!
