I spent some much needed time in the timber with my good friends Ed Arnold and Dan Shecthman for an overniter.

Batoning and making curls with a 154CM Tusker. I've been wanting to test this steel since I made this knife. Very pleased with it's performance.

Looks awesome Scott!! Thanks for the pics..

Im very interested in what you think about that Woodsmens Pal...Ive been lookin at those for awhile, but dont know much about them.:thumbdn:

That Tusker looks great. Im glad it performed well for ya...So.. Exactly how comfortable are you with its performance? Notice any chipping or edge retention issues?

A good fire, good tools, and great company is my idea of paradise. Glad you got out and unwound a bit...

SHS, the Winkler is one of his production pieces at a low cost. Ed really likes how it performed
Jake, the Tusker worked great. No edge issues at all, still shaves. I wouldn't hesitate to use 154CM in a hard use knife.
I really think the Woodsman's Pal as a survival tool is a good idea. It's light weight and can ride in a pack comfortable. Dan was real happy with it.
The axe Ed is using to drop that standing dead maple is a Biber made in Austria. Similar head shape to an OX-Head axe

Hmmm....Very cool.

Im gonna have to look into a WP!

Thats great that the stainless worked out. Its the first knife of that size I remember seeing in that steel..

Thanks Scott!

Great stuff Scott, glad to see that Tusker worked out well !

How does 154CM compare price wise against High Carbon steels such as the A2 and O1 that you use ?

Scott,
Can you post a comparison shot of the spines of your 154 Tusker to your a2 or 01 Big Boar Tusker? Would be cool to see which one you believe would out perform.Everyday ismore of a love affair for my new Big Boar Tusker it is jst perfect for eveything I will ever do.

Mike

I'll do that tomorrow Mike. I have to waste my day in the county courthouse, jury duty summons.
I think the 1/4" will out perform 5/32" in chopping/splitting but 5/32" will be better at slicing. The SS Tusker isn't a slacker chopping and splitting, I just feel with 1/4" you have more mass which will work faster.
Scott

Here's the spine pic Mike. Also both together. The top one is the very first Big Boar Tusker I ever made. This knife has seen some hard use.

Mike, Dan is an outstanding woodsman and is a super guy also. Very knowledgable about the outdoors and has the experience to back it up. I'm lucky to have friends like Ed and Dan to learn from. Ed is a top knotch woodsman too.

Scott,
Thanks for posting the spine shots. I guess I am just one of those people that love a 1/4 inch thick knife. The extra weight is always a plus for me when it comes to chopping or batoning wood.

Mike

Awesome time we had Scott. Scott, Dan and I are diehard carbon steel lovers but stainless still has it's place and heat treated well can preform well.
After this trip we hit a flea market and I picked up an old Explorer hollow handle blade circa '84. These weren't the junk being thrown out at the time but were good users, 440C the blade took a great edge.
SHS the Winkler is his field knife made for the Teams and others, straight forward hard user. LT. Mike and I are looking into meeting at Scott's some Thurs. morning for some testing and hanging out, not sure when, but I'll bring the Winkler along for you to see.
