Where have I been? That is a very good question.

Well, here is the last two years in a nut shell.

Many on you know that three years ago I cut back on custom work. What is not common knowledge is that four years ago I went into behind the scenes production work for many makers Mid-Tech products. Two years ago, I opened a full production shop, complete with employees. It was a successful company with over a dozen clients and turning out about 400 knives per week.

Now what I did not know at the time was that I suck at business. I have no head for it what so ever. So due to bad pricing and even worse job quotes we were only breaking even every month. Tack on the fact that most knife makers suck at business, I ended up with tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid invoices. In most cases I continued to provide products for makers who were sometimes more than 5 months behind in payments. Hey, I said I sucked at business. All this left me working over 60hrs per week, away from home and never being able to see my family and only breaking even. So after 17 yrs making knives, I decided to make a major change.

I went back to school in June 06. I closed the doors to my shop in March 07 and am proud to say that in July 07 I passed my FAA check ride and am now a fully licensed Commercial Helicopter Pilot. Flying is not my love or passion, it is just my job. I enjoy my work and don’t regret making the change but knives were always my passion. The problem is that I found that by making my passion my job, I destroyed any enjoyment of it.

I have stayed in the knife field through my legal work. I am regularly retained by the Orange County CA courts to act as a expert witness in knife related cases and to date have testified in 67 criminal trials (winning 100%) . My success in the criminal courts resulted in my being hired by some major knife companies and I have successfully won several civil cases for these companies.

In August I made another major change. We purchased a new home in Phoenix Az and made the move from CA back to America. It was an easy decision to make. We were able to own a home for the first time and are very happy here. We are not yet fully settled and still have half our stuff in boxes but we are already certain that it was the right thing to do. The courts are willing to fly me out to CA for court (I have jury trials on the 10th and 12th of this month) so I am still continuing my work in that area.

I do not currently have a shop to speak of. I went from a 2000sqft production shop to a two car garage with one 110 outlet. So all my machines and tools are sitting pushed up against one wall. I do not have any plans on going back to knife making full time. I will still make knives as my hobby but have yet to decide if I will ever sell another or just give them away as gifts for friends and family.

I have a few regrets. I lost several long time friends when I told them that I would not be able to continue to provide them with knives until they paid their debts. I ended up just writing off about 5k in accounts receivables. I also owe several of my suppliers some money (and will pay it all back when I can). The lose of friendships hurt a lot, but I had to do what was right for me and my family.

So that’s about it. I know several people have been trying to contact me for new products or knife rebuilds. I will not be accepting any new orders, but am willing to do any rebuild or warrantee work. So feel free to contact me at rwclarkjr@yahoo.com .

Your family and their and your health and sanity are what's most important and children grow up too quickly, so congratulations on the tough choices you've had to make.

Good to hear from you R. W. It is great to see that you are doing well. Just a little while ago I was wondering what had happened to you. Now I know.

RW... you are welcome to hideout here in Vegas and use any equipment in my shop bud.

Any chance you will be in for SHOT show ? Sure would enjoy another sit down conversation about anything and everything my friend.

Glad to here you are well.

Family comes first!! I am glad that you are happy with your house in AZ!!! I wish you the best of luck! I am sorry about the loss of friends, that IS painful.

I do feel fortunate to have landed one of your pieces just before things began to change in your life. And I think you are doing a fine thing by doing what you need to do, and going back to enjoying what you liked to do.
Good luck RW!

Ron, it's been a while since we talked, but I am glad to hear that you made some tough decisions that are best for you and your family. Like JTW said, I hope to run into you at SHOT show next year.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Some choices were very hard, some very easy. Some, like selling knives again, I change my mind on several times a day.

I won't be making it up to SHOT this year. I will be starting Instructors School the beginning of Jan. The CFI and CFII courses are the hardest in avaition and I will have my nose buried in books for the two months of the classes. I put off the courses for several months due to the move, but I really can't put them off any longer. Would kind of like to be there but its just not really an option. So sorry but no penthouse party this year. :D

Nice to hear about your last couple years and sorry that it did not work out. Just so you don't forget the fine knives you made I'm posting one that I own

Dang, thats one nice looking knife :D

Some makers/companies made no secret of the fact that I did their work, others wanted it kept quite. So for that reason I dont list everyone I did work for. But here are the ones that were open about it.

Simonich Knives
Deepak Chopra Cutlery (all the CRKT auto coversions)
Dynamic Knife Designs aka DKD (took over parts of manufacturing after Wayne Clark got sick)
Graham Knives
Tru-Grit (kit blades)

And my all time best customers

ShivWorks

Those guys were class.

Ron,
Life is full of tough decisions, that we all make every day. I am glad to hear that life is good for you now.

Tack on the fact that most knife makers suck at business, I ended up with tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid invoices. In most cases I continued to provide products for makers who were sometimes more than 5 months behind in payments.

Just for the record, we always paid our bill very promptly.

Ron , that offers is good forever , you make it to Vegas or feel the need to grind something out , my shop is always open.... Sorry you won't make it in for SHOT bud.

Yes, Graham Knives always paid. Had no issues with them. They were good to deal with. Sorry I did not mention it before.

Wylie, If I get the flight job I want, I may be in Vegas 2-3 days per week. So you may be seeing alot of me LOL.

Ron,
Sounds like you are doing well and your priorities are well in order.
All the best to you and your family. If you need anything steel related don't hesitate to call - I owe you a few.

"Luck is the result of superior planning".
Two things young people do not pay attention to, their health, and their funds.
What you learned from a business was a cheap price to pay if you had continued. Your work was great and you are full of fine ideas. We are not all born knowning. A difficult learning experience that will make you a better money manager.
Taking a hobby, or strong interest and turning it into a business can work, but not many comprehend that it is not a sale until the tenth of the month.
A good life choice made at a critical time.

R.W.
Be well, you will do just fine !

Just a short follow up to what I am up to.

I was accepted into the Maricopa County Sheriffs Dept. Aviation Division and will most likely be flying for Search and Rescue. I have a bit additional training to undergo with MCSO and with any luck will be up in the air in late May. I am pretty excited about this new development.

While my shop facilities are far too limited to really produce knives with any real regularity, I was convinced by a couple fellow knifemakers to continue with custom leather work. So I am working on custom sheaths and concealed carry holsters.

I don't own or run the company but am doing all the production for Arizona Gun Leather. It keeps me busy when I am not flying and it is nice to have my hands busy again.

Thanks again all
Ron
