Any thoughts on the R9 vs the Rat Mastiff? Anybody that has owned/currently owns both with an opinion?

I have both.

If you can get your hands on a Mastiff easily, then its the go to blade. But they are uncommon and expensive.

The R9 is easy to get a hold of, and a lot cheaper.

Dont let the through hardened blade of the R9 dissuade you, normal use will not tell the difference. Normal for me is pounding through hardwood for the grill into rocks in the ground so I am not easy on my knives. ;) I once tried to pound my Steel Heart E into a hardened nut so yea, I love abusing my cutlery.

Need a side by side pic? I can take one. :)

Hi Dwayne,

I suspected you might have both................and I am NOT going to refuse pictures!!! :)

Of all the 9 inch blade the Swamp has made the M9 has got to be the top for me. Its just so....... freaking awesome.

Whups, I've been away from the computer all day and missed my photo opportunity today, I'll try for tomorrow and throw an M9 in the photo mix. :)

Got a quick n dirty pic, about to head out to pick up the daughter from camp. :)

Can you guess which one is the user? :p I do like the palm swell on the R9 and will have to break it in soon just to see how it stacks up.

One glaring difference is the blade width. I do prefer a wide blade, but thats just simple looks preference not functional preference.

I'm jealous..... er, I mean envious, sir! ;) Thank you for the comparison pic. Since I have no '9' yet, my RMD may need some obligatory new pants, say x-back and barb-wire. (...for the extra effort) :)

PK and A L G,

Dang it you two, an M9LE popped up on the exchange and i just had to have it, thanks in part to your love fest with it! If an (affordable) mastiff comes up before my mastiff fund is replenished I'm holding you guys responsible! (Okay, I can't be mad, I've got an M9 coming) :) :) :D

You got a heck of a deal on that M9 LE. As much as I like the mastiff I think the M9 will fill the role for you very well and not leaving you wanting.

Yeah I saw that and would have jumped on it too if you hadn't already claimed it. I was kicking myself for not checking g the exchange sooner. Great price on that M9.

Thanks guys, and I hope you know my post was in good fun. I think the M9 will scratch the itch well for now. Leatherman, PM incoming, seems I do have a '9' in need of some britches. :)

I have a Battle Rat and R9. The R9 is awesome! The Battle Rat is a legend for a good reason! But the R 9 is such a great camp knife. I really am impressed by it. The BR is alot more lighter so if weight is a factor look for one.
