The light that gets you home. That is the motto for the RA Twisty, and I believe it. RA is a division of HDS systems, and maker of the twisty, and clicky model of lights. I first found out about this light through forum member Snow on a hike. He has this same model. I was immediatly hooked, I knew I had to get one. It is very small in size, but not too small. It is very well built and has alot of innovative features.

High efficiancy white LED

3 brightness settings, adjusted by a twist of the battery compartment.

120 lumens on high, 100 lumens on medium, and 85 lumens on low.

It runs off a single CR123A, with an astonishing 1 hour at 120 lumens on a single battery!!! and 8 hours on medium!

It is 1in x 3.5in in size.

The electronics are fully protected from shock, as is the lens, and it is waterproof to 2ATM.

Heres some interesting stuff about the low battery indication. When the battery is unable to supply enough power to run at the selected output, the light momentarily turns off, and then back on to half the previous brightness. After this process as started, it will double blink once a minute to remind you the battery needs to be changed. High speed!! It does this on each setting, so if the process starts when the light is on high, you can downgrade to medium to extend battery life, and when it starts running out of power at that level it starts the process over. When it cannot run any level it will blink once a second to let you know.

When you replace a battery, the light comes on dimily for 2 seconds to indicate it is functioning correctly.

I ordered this one from The Battery Station, and it was shipped with an instruction manual, a spare O ring, and 4 spare batteries in a neat little holder, for a total of 5 batteries!!

On to the pics......

Well made light!!

Crenelated bezel protects the extra thick lens, and can be used for personal protection.

This is a great light. This one replaced my Surefire E2L for work and play.

The threads are very robust, and the light is finished in Type3 Hard anno, with a stainless stell bezel. So it will be very durable. It takes 2 hands to twist it, so I have faith it will not come on accidentally.

The reflector is milled out of alluminum, as opposed to the plastics in some lights, and the lens is an ultra clear, extra thick glass.

In RAs tests of this model it was dropped repeatedly from a height exceeding 20 feet onto concrete, pavement, and rocks. After over 20 drops, the light was repeatedly thrown at concrete, pavement and rocks. The light still functions normally. The glass lens did not break even with this severe punishment. Pretty impressive.

Hope you enjoyed the review, I thought I would offer up an option to the often suggested lights from surefire etc... This one seems to get very little play, and I think it is a very, very nice option when looking for that one special EDC light for the city or in the woods.

The Twisty is a pretty awesome light. I haven't gotten around to purchasing one for myself but I did get a chance to handle it and it does seem to be everything Henry at RA Lights claims.

Did you know, there is a secret backdoor to reprogram the Twisty to whatever brightnesses you want it to be? If you want to know I'll go look for the instructions.

Nice review and pics J ... I love the size it's nice and compact. I currently own a Fenix L2D-Q5 which I absolutely love but it's a little too big for EDC ... based on your review I'm definitely looking into possibly getting one of these bad boys

Damn Carrot! Thats alot of info!!!

Thanks for the programin link. I mightjust have to play with it... That is really cool! 20 differant settings!

Do you mean the high is 100, medium around 17 and low around 0.3 lumen?

man it never fails. Two years ago i was big into modding flashlights, spent 1000's of $$$ on parts and lights, sold everything for less than $200 a year later.....and yet i get hooked on hi end flashlights again.....

That's what it should be. Maybe Jake got a strange mutant light!

Here is mine on low:

You can tell it's around a lumen or less because you can look directly at the LED.

Edit: Just reset the low level to the lowest possible output: 0.08 lumens. It's crazy low. The emitter is barely glowing. Very cool IMO.

I asked because no Twisty was designed that way as far as I know. The website for Ra does not mention it. The Battery Station website does not mention it. And since you did not know how to program it I assumed you did not set it that way. Plus, I thought the human eye would not be able to tell a difference between 120, 100 and 85 lumens. So I thought maybe you missed typed it. I wonder if it is a typo in the manual? Either way, sorry.

Rob

Not sure I follow man.

High is 120, medium is 100, and low is 85 according to the manual mine came with.

Yeah I am pretty sure it's a typo as well. Those three levels would be way too close together to make any sense.
