Today while reading Tim Stetzer's feature in the newest Tactical Knives Magazine I decide to make a rabbit stick, but it was raining like crazy. Lucky for me I harvested a stick a few days ago and had it in my garage. So even though the weather sucked I still got some fun time. :) In joy. I used my Blind Horse Knives Pathfinder. I think from now on Ill keep a stash of sticks in the garage for rainy days

My wife makes fun of me because of all the sticks and things I bring home and keep in the garage, but that's why I do it too! It's a fun and convenient way to practice at home. Nice knife too, I just read that article last night and it made me want a Pathfinder.

Yeah, I keep a pile of sticks too. Everything from yucca (used decoratively around these parts and there's a place in a park I harvest it from) and basswood (these two woods are my all time favorites for friction fires), to pine and mulberry. During the summer I'll pick up discarded branches from people cleaning up their yards and let them dry inside. Drives my wife crazy.

Great project!

Ha! I don't feel like a freak for my stick and natural tider collection any more!

I told a guy at work once that I took a walk down the road and found a nice bow lying in the ditch so I took it home. He was amazed for a while but eventually said "that "bow" you found was just a stupid stick for a bow drill, wasn't it?"

Has anyone here killed (or seen someone else do so) a rabbit with a thrown stick? I've read about it too and it sounds cool but I'd like to see that done some time. I'd think you'd have to be a heck of a shot to make that happen.

You just side-arm it at the bunny and hope for the best, right?

Well, many native american tribes would have several people flush a rabbit out of hiding and chase it towards a guy with a throwing stick. Made for much more accurate throwing and was easier because the rabbit would actually run into the stick and it would cause more damage.

If I were a betting man, my money would also be on the bunny

Good stuff buddy, I still think an Apache throwing star would work better than a rabbit stick !

A throwing stick is nothing more than a boomerang that doesn't return.
It does work, if you practice, and can be used for more things than rabbit.
If you've ever thrown a stick for a dog you know how far and accurate it can go.
Birds, squirrel, waterfowl, cats, evil doers, are all susceptible to the throwing stick.

Yes,..........ME!
I carry a rabbit stick everywhere I hike, even at work, strapped to my pack. I have made a dozen or so but this one is my favorite for throwing. It has a flat elliptical cross section and generates a bit of "lift" as it flies, kinda like a propeller. It really excels at throwing because the lift gives it a very flat trajectory.

When I'm small game hunting with Atlatl or Bow and Arrow I carry this style. The knob on the end make it great for delivering a finishing blow to small/med game

Rabbit sticks are fun, and a great addition to the primitive arsenal, but it takes a lot of practice to become proficient. I carry one with me all the time. It doesn't weigh much on the pack and gives me lots of practice.

I've seen Bear do it

Dang - no kidding! I'm impressed as heck. What kind of range do you get to before hurling the stick usually? That's pretty sweet, man!
