Just curious. Does anyone have any experience with these? i.e Keesteel, Longdon, Tuatahi etc.

How do they really perform and how durable are they?

I own axes by Keech (Keesteel), and Tuatahi. I've also used ones made by Langdon and Hytest.

In terms of performance and durability, the determining factor isn't so much the axe, as the grinder and the wood. All of these axes come as 'blanks' which need to be ground and edged by a competent craftsman. A good competition axe will be matched both to the chopper and the type of wood to be chopped. A good competition axe, in the hands of a trained and talented chopper, is truly something to behold. HOWEVER, the same axe, in the woods, will be destroyed in no time. These are very precise tools, designed to cut green, bark- and knot-free wood at world record speeds. They CAN NOT take the abuse of woods work. They are far too hard, ground too thin, and will chip easily.

If you are hoping to replicate the size and feel of a competition axe in more of a work axe, many of the companies that cast racing axes also cast similar work axes out of a more durable steel. Baileys, for example, carries work axes made by Tuatahi that look and swing just like the 'real thing' but won't come apart in the woods.

Hope that helps.
