When did the term 'pink slip' come to mean proof of insurance slip?

in my school of thought, I always knew the pink slip to mean the proof of ownership and registration. You can't lose a race and sign over your insurance, you sign over the ownership.

Sorry for the rant. is this different in the US?

If I remember correctly my ownerships were all green and my insurence slips were pink. I raced a guy for pink slips once and intentionally lost then gave him my insurence bill:p should have seen the look on his face:D

I should mention I am origanaly from eastern Ontario. I offered to re raced him for owner ships but he backed out once I popped the hood to un cork the headers. He saw the dual Hollys sitting high and proud on a polished Edelbrock on a tuned 327 and backed out real quick.
My car at the time was a bit of a sleeper, just a plain looking 1980 Camaro RS other then the wheels and tires it looked stock. And yes I had a major mullet at the time:o

When I was growing up in the 70's street racing in Southern Ohio a "Pink Slip" was the title to your car. They used to be pink. Out here in California the Titles are Blue.

If you lost the race, you lost your car!
