Racoons. Are they getting smarter?

Dudes - I watched Raccoons (or witnessed after the fact) raccoons:

1) Opening coolers.
2) Unzipping tents.
3) Getting into closed stuff sacks.

and more.

Is it just me - or are Raccoons evolving before our eyes?

Share your stories of what Raccoons or any other animal can do - let's speculate...

I dont know if raccoons have been trying to tell me things in sign language for the past 10 years, or if they were just looking at their reflections in the window of my home. Im am not ruling out sign language -they seem very serious about something... I just hope I figure out what it is, before its too late.

Personally I think people are getting dumber, this makes the raccoons look smarter by comparison.

Racoon gets into metal garbage can. Clean up mess.

New can with extra tight-fitting lid. ("Varmit Proof")

Racoon gets into new garbage can. Clean up mess.

Three cider blocks on lid of can.

Racoon gets into can by knocking cinder blocks off. Clean up mess.

Three cinder blocks chained to lid of can.

Racoon gets back against building and pushes can over with back legs, cinder blocks and all, as I watch from second story. Weight of cinder blocks opens lid as can hits the ground Clean up mess

Can chained to building. Racoon works chains down somehow towards bottom of can and repeats above. Clean up mess.

Can now in detached garage.

Racoon can't get into can.

Victory for the superior species. Yah. Right.

I thnik there pretty smart critters; My girl friend loves them (makes it hard for me to shoot 'em btw) and one time found a few kits in the back yard. So she opened up the window and began imitating there sounds, all of a sudden all 3 kits stood up in a row and began "murring" and "biping" (or whatever sound it is they make) right back to her.

This whent on for about 45 sec before the mom came by and they all left.

So, smart? I guess so, either that or my girlfriend can just speak coon. :p

When I was stationed at Fort Drum, NY Racoons were all over the place up there, They would come in about the crack of dawn where we were racking out, they would open Rucks and get into MRE's. I saw 4 come in like a fire Team one time they had a team leader and were in the Fire Team Wedge Formation.

A family member of mine set a trap for a raccoon that was busting up the trash every night, and caught one.

It was a baby raccoon in the cage, and the mother dragged the entire thing to the edge of the woods and freed the baby, screaming all the way.

I used to trap when I was a kid. The raccoons would flip the traps upside down then take the bait.

Nope, no ambush! but the story is true, we did have to get aggresive to get them out of there, part of the problem up there is Some Soldiers will feed the little Bastards and that makes it worse.

Hahaha. I love when it feels like you are talking to animals like that lol. At the leas they didn't make a run for your gf and jump into the house.

Im laughing pretty hard after reading this thread. A racoon tryed climbing up my sister's nieghbors balcony it got caught by a trap he set. My sister wont let her cats on the balcony at night anymore, so I thinl physicologicly they've won.

That only would have been bad for me, she rescues that darn things and keeps them as pets untill they get big, than takes them to re-hab centers!

I'd end up in the dog house for enforcing the "1 wild animal in the house at a time rule":foot:

She sounds a little like my wife. The place here is like a zoo, I've been thinking I could charge people money to come and look at all the animals.

Hey Guys...

LMAO at Rat Fink..

True Dat...

I agree they are very smart...
I've tried Everything to keep them out of my garbage.. They get the lids off, I put bungee cords from handle to handle.. They chew the bungee cords off...

I watched one stand up on the side of the can and rock it until it fell over.

I'll sometimes sit in the trailer with the window screen taken out and Snipe them.. Got 6 one night, one after another..

I've fantasized on different ways of knocking them off... LOL
