Ok. Anyone have experience with radar detectors? What brand/model, where are the best prices, or where can I find more info (reviews) on them so I can make my own decision?

Thanks!!!

I had an el-cheapo Escort forever until it puked on me.

I got caught doing 29 in a 25 zone. Two points and a $100 fine. Great.

Got a Valentine One for a present; expensive at $399 but I never looked back.

Sensitive as hell little thing; I get a ton of falsies in city, but then again, I ain't speeding in the city.

have had bel, escort, cobra, uniden and whistler, the best by far is the valentine one, pretty high $$ but so are tickets.

often drive in south texas, very flat, can pick up Ka band from 5 miles i bet, so far ya think its falsing, but no.

also i drive a corvette and speed too much, my wife cant believe i dont get more tickets.

have gotten 1 warning and 1 speeding since '97, and i travel a LOT.

get the V1 ya wont regret it, has a ti case which wont break, the 2nd best i've had a top of the line bel, case broke after falling off the window a bunch, and ya can get the V1 upgraded for a minimal amount when the upgrades are available.

V1 rules, they also give ya the # of sources and the direction (front/back/left/right) along w/the band and strenght,VERY helpfull, ya just cant beat them imho.

they are high $$ but so are tickets

I have used the passport series from Escort for a long time with very good results. Today, if I were in the market, I would buy the 8500 model.

All Radar Detector are of marginal quality in the city but, along a regular route (like to and from work everyday), you memorize whether you want to or not, where the false alarms are and how strong they are. When you get a new one, you know you found a cop.

My radar detector has worked great at avoiding large speed traps in major cities, local's hiding in the bushes in rural areas and, on major highways. You still have to use common sense because instant on radar and lasers will get you the first time everytime - you need to alert off the reflection of someone else, not alert after you have been nailed.

For the areas that use the safety features, you will also get alerts about road hazzards. I must admit though, a Cadilac with a back up sensor will suprise you when you get the railroad tracks warning :)

Radar Detectors are good thing if you use common sense. They can't do it all for you. Play safe.

Have owned a couple of Cobras, a Uniden, and a Fox. All so-so. When I had a black Testarossa as my EDD, I also belonged to a Ferrari owners' forum. EVERY member owned a Valentine. Just so they wouldn't go over the limit indvertantly, of course.

I ride a motorcycle(Kawi ZX-12R), so a cordless model is just right for me. I have the Bel 946. It comes with an earphone jack for use with a helmet.

LOL!

Radar detectors are illegal in Finland, and even though I don't agree with speed limits in many places, I understand the bit about detectors.. I mean, why set speed limits at all if they cannot be enforced.

I never actually thought the detectors were legal somewhere.:D

Gon,

As I mentioned earlier,

I got caught doing 29 in a 25 zone. Two points and a $100 fine. Great.

I use mine to be aware of overzealous policefolk, their damn quotas, and the effin court prosecutor who felt that it was okay to have "Zero Tolerance" for my 29 in a 25 speeding error, but let the JUDGE WHO WAS PRESIDING OVER MY CASE, WHO REAR-ENDED MY FATHER AND I WHILE HE WAS DUI SIX YEARS EARLIER, GET AWAY SCOT-FREE.

I very rarely drive much past 10 mph above the limit. And yet, the cops seem to be BLIND to the slinky blonde in the TT or Boxster who shot past me, driving dangerously at 90mph, and find ME to be guilty of going 11mph over the limit.

Can you tell I'm bitter? That's why I have a detector.

-Jon

Eh, justice is not equal to all and that's why you use a detector? :)

I got no problem with you or anyone else using one. But you can't deny that they are only good for speeding and not getting caught. As I see it, the fact that they're allowed undermines the law. It's like the law allowed people to pay something beforehand (price of detector) and speed away as they please. This is why I cannot understand the combination of strict speed limits and legal detectors.

Well.

Actually, no.

I use it to protect myself from certain police that are unjust or unfair .

I'm all for speed limits. I don't speed, and to be honest, I drive slower than many other people on the road, and I don't tailgat.

I don't speed. But I don't like being caught for something I didn't do.

If cops stuck to measuring speed by matching you with their calibrated cars, that's one thing. However, the guns can be off by 5-10mph, regularly.

Is that fair? Is it fair to be judged by something that isn't accurate?

But have you ever been driving down a road AT the speed limit and break out in a cold sweat because some cop out there who's had a bad day, has his name written all over your ass?

Don't get me wrong. I like the good cops. I'm just sticking up for myself when it comes to knowing what they're doing. Using a detector is just as dirty as hiding under an overpass or setting up speed traps or setting up stop lights that turn green every 7 minutes (yes, 7 minutes.)

It's just another part of the war. They get their damn lying inaccurate radar guns, I want the ability to know just when they're using them against me.

-Jon

I can see your point, and that there's another motivation for the detectors. Sorry to hear you got so unreasonable police there. I suspect, though, that if they bust you with an inaccurate radar, you can reclaim your money in court with a high probability of success.

Nevertheless, you gotta be one in a million with your purpose for a detector :)
