radar detectors?

I've taken the defensive driving course as many times as possible in FL and am now having to pay real money for speeding tickets. Doesn't seem to do any good to say, "See how safe I am? Even if I was doing 85 in no traffic"

So........... I'm thinking of a detector.
Any good ones? Any cheap ones? Any good, cheap ones?
TIA

I have a Valentine One and a Bel RX 65. The Valentine one is great and the Bel RX 65 is just as good.

I drive fast all the time and rarely get stopped because of the detectors, but you cannot rely solely on detectors. Always keep someone faster in front of you.

Simple don't be the one idiot blowing by every other car, let the cops find someone going faster.

There is a fool proof way to avoid speeding tickets and it won't cost you a dime..... Don't speed. Now if the majority of the cars on the road are going faster, you should keep up. But aside from that slow down and you won't have a problem.

I think a lot of traffic cops are using laser RADAR guns which don't give you any warning, once you get a blip on your detector you've already been pinged.

There was a great post on CHP (california highway patrol) forums, with a guy asking about what radar detector he should get. THe CHP guys told him it wouldn't do any good as they use lasers; a few weeks later he detailed how his detector failed him. Pretty epic, if the veracity of the post could be confirmed.

I wouldn't doubt that. I attended traffic school after getting caught for an illegal 1 hour no u-turn I made. The instructor talked a bit about new laser radar detectors, they do single shot measuring, doesn't require a warm up before getting a reading. It can be shot and get a measure instantly.

So a detector will beep once shot at, but by then you've been caught.

I've always thought of people using radar detectors as tools myself.

Sure I speed, but I try to keep in check. Not like I need to drive so much faster than anyone else on the road that I would be singled out. (Hell the flow of traffic is often 5-25mph over the limit on or off highways/freeways.)

cops will always tell ya that.

i drive a vette and my valentine one has saved me a helluva lotta money, the V1 is my fav due to the directional arrows and not having as many falses vs bel and others i have tried, the V1 also has a titanium case vs plastic for a lot of others and they seem to hold up better than any of the others i have tried, and yes it also works on laser, though not many LEO's use lasers in TX, its mostly DPS with the lasers, the only time in the last 15 yrs (knock on wood lol) i have gotten a ticket was when i wasnt paying attention and the LEO paced me from behind, so i would say the detector helps quite a bit as i almost always am 10-20 over and drive a conspicuous car to boot, my girlfriend cant believe i dont get pulled over more often.

it always cracks me up when folks say "LEO's say they dont work anyway" , lol, what do you expect them to say?

2 of my buds who are LEO's (austin PD and travis county SD) both, when traveling, use V1's, actions speak louder than words.

If you have an iPhone, get a free ap called Trapster. It uses the iPhone's geolocation capabilities to locate you and then uses a realtime database to inform you of current traps as you drive. It's crowd-sourced. If you see an officer working a trap, you tap a button and that get's reported intothe database. It's amazing to me how well Trapster works. When I see an officer working a trap, 9 out of 10 times I knew he was there already because of trapster. And in the 10th case, I can tap that button and make it ten out of ten for everyone else. For a free ap, it's really amazing.

yep yep, got tagged by one during the summer. its the first time the LASER warning ever popped up on my detector.. i was not speeding at the time

i use a whistler.

Dudes! (and dudettes, if appropriate)

I KNOW that not speeding and not being the one SOB out in front of everybody are the best preventions.

However, your parents apparently chose not to abstain at least once as well.

Yes and no. A laser will provide warning if it is shot at the car infront of you or at your car. Either of this will probably be picked up by a good detector. You could improve the odds of not getting tagged by laser by using something like this,Veil Laser Absorbing Paint.

Umm... well, I might be wrong on the laser prevalence thing, if hung-solo right. However, I recall that at least for anti radar, there is no real workable way to have that and still be a car. Laser might be possible, but passive systems sound a little incredible for me to believe without massive corroborating evidence. There's a reason radar blockers/jammers are banned...

Police officers usually aim the laser at the license plate because they are both flat and highly reflective. You can buy license plate covera which are transparent but have a laser-absorbing coating and they are highly effective. Also available and effective are spray-on products which either contain a laser-absorbing dye or simply cause the surface of the plate to become dispersive. Again, both methods are effective. These are all passive countermeasures against laser radars; they are realistic and effective.

There are also passsive countermeasures for radar. The military's Stealth technology is the obvious example. But Stealth is expensive. But stealth bomber has to hide against very sophisticated and powerful military radars. Police speed radar is neither sophisticated (compared to modern military radar) nor powerful. So, it stands to reason that a car needs only a small fraction of Stealth technology to become invisible to police radar using passive countermeasures.

There are even passive countermeasure products against photo red light and speed enforcement which have proven remarkably effective for their users.

Passive countermeasures against radar, laser, and photo enforcement are real, practical, and available.

http://www.ontrackcorp.com is one example of a supplier of such products.

In Europe they are mostly outlawed but there is one company that makes a radar detector that cannot itself be detected. They also supply a laser jammer.
And I speak from experience when I say that both are fool- and fullproof. :D

They are the company that used to make the Ventura, which was the best radar detector in the world but could be detected by the police using countermeasures. The new model (DSI) cannot.
I love this arms race thing, don't you? :D

so help me out again.... we are allowed talk of breaking the speed limit intentionaly. which is an illegal activity? is it ok because its viewed as a trivial offence? that being said.
if you have a need for speed... there are places called race tracks... look into em. or pay your money and collect your points.
