Radius Platen?

From what I've read it seems that a few people are using a radius platen to get a very shallow hollow grind on their blades.

I think Butch Harner uses one equivalent to 4' for making his incredible Japanese style chef knives? Butch if you're reading this perhaps you can chime in?

For those who have one: how do you find it compared to grinding on a contact wheel? I'm assuming you make them yourself as I haven't seen any in production - did you have it precision machined or did you forge and sand it smooth out of something like O1?

Just looking for an insight into how people have made them and what they're like to use.

Thanks guys,
Steve.
