Hey Forumites, I need your help! I am fixing to sell several knives that have been donated by some of your fellow Forumites. The money is going to an 11 year old boy in California to help cover the costs of a his dream trip to Washington DC. I am very good friends with his family and theres no way they can afford to pay for the trip, and I decided to help them out.
What I need to know is would you folks rather participate in auctions or raffles for the donated knives??? Thanks in advance and take care! Michael

I think it really depends on the value of the knives.... If they are *cheaper* knives, an auction would probably be better.... On more expensive blades, more people would probably be willing to fork out $5.00 for a chance...

Just my opinion!

I like the idea of a raffle as well.
Also if donations would be acceptable, let me
know.

A raffle would get participation from more forumites while an auction, depending ont he number and "quality" of pieces, could bring in more money. Having said that, I think that a raffle would be a better choice as more could enter and it would be a real bladeforums community thing instead of a, "for those of you with a lot of disposable cash...) thing. I just emptied my bank account again in order to cover tuition and I could not participate in an auction. Do list info on where donations could be sent to though, as that is an excellent suggestion.

Michael,

I agree that a raffle would allow more participation. You could put a minimum on the raffle in case participation is low. Of course, this is a problem that could affect an auction as well.

Past raffles here on the forums lacked very much participation. However this cause may do better.

Be sure to post your decision several places to get maximum participation.

How about a raffle with payments made via Pay Pal? Maybe more folks would get involved.

Mike, go with the raffle, I think more people would participate and you'll raise more money.

Let's say for example you have 10 knives worth $100 each, total value $1000. If you auction them off as a group I doubt if anyone would offer anywhere close to that, good cause or not. If you auction them off individualy, you might come close on some, but I doubt many would bid.

If on the other hand you have a raffle with a different knife every week, and charge $5 a chance than all you need to sell is 20 chances a week for you to break even. Because this is a good cause I think you'll do a lot better than that. Depending on the knives offered of course.

Well, looks like it'sraffles and I think you have an excellent idea Tom! By using paypal it will let more folks get in. I'll be startin the first one tomorrow. I'll post it in this forum
and it will run for 2 weeks and the drawing will be on the 21st at 6 pm central. I'll post the winner in the thread. Thanks for the help folks!!!
