Someone told me that black rag micarta isn't made anymore? Is this true?

Dennis,
Do you mean black linen/canvas micarta? It is available.

Rag micarta was brownish/greenish, and it's not been around for several years.

Dennis,

The knife below features Rag Micarta. If someone has some, I want it!!!

Neil, how can you torture me with more pics of your awesome knives?

:)

That knife was rather unique with that material. In addition to the green and brown, I've also had some that was brown and almost yellow, no green in it at all. I will gladly accept either if someone has some:cool:

I've been told that they used to make labratory counter tops out of it and also brake shoes for elevators. If someone ever found a whole counter top made from it, they would have a gold mine!!

I sh*t you guys not, on the college campus where I went to school and now work, we had an old science building with countertops that I would swear were rag micarta. The building was torn down about 10 years ago and all of the old fixtures were stripped out. First time I saw a knife with rag micarta I thought -- countertops!

Kit,

I'll have to wait until after Vegas to REALLY read that thread:eek: I guess I could just ask Trace about it while we are both there. Sorry you are not making it this year :(

Neil,
I actually tried to get the company I get micartas from to produce some. Said they needed a formula. Maybe enough of us can get our heads together and actually get some made. IMHO, it is the best synthetic handle material that was ever available.

There are a few guys like me that really value Rag micarta on a good using knife. I don't know that there is enough interest to justify a big run but, there is a market for it. It may turn out like stag, tell me I can't have it and I want it. When its available readily, interest dies down.

How much dollar-wise would you need to order to make it viable to get another batch made?

I've only had one rag micarta handled knife, haven't seen any knife like it since. I kick myself for trading it off.

If you guys need any pieces for a chemical analysis I have some scraps that i'm wiling to donate. I also have some larger pieces thatI am saving for scales!

Hey guys, checkout this site Tufnol , I've spoken to one of the technical guys there & he was very interested in looking at some micarta scraps to try & produce rag tufnol (especially when I told him how big the knifemaker market is;) ) So, Striper, if you want to drop me a mail:
colin@britishblades.com
colin.mciver@virgin.net
colinm@inspiredtech.co.uk

& are willing to ship some scraps to the UK, I'll give you the guys name to send it to & we may be looking at a new product (maybe in time to marry up to LM1;) )

I'm not in this for anything (except maybe getting on first name terms with Tufnol & being able to nip in for a coffee & a few scraps myself;) :D )

Wow! Look what I started! There is definitely a demand for it. Maybe someone will make some.

'course, if someone from the co. that makes Micarta sees a competitor getting involved.......;)

...to ship some rag micarta to the manufacturers in the UK, please email me & I will give the technicians contact name to you.

TIA

Colin
