Here my recent tomahawk made from a rail road spike.

That looks great! What kind of wood/stain is used on the handle?

That really is cool! I'd also like to know what you used for the handle, cherry perhaps?

How long did it take you beginning to end? Any other examples of your work out there that you want to share?

I've seen some clever uses of those railroad spikes by knife makers in the past but that has to be the best one yet. Nice! I like it a lot.

Great job on the wood handle too.

Forging, grinding and making handle with finish takes about 6 to 8 hours total. Click on my profile there is a link to my webpage. Thanks, Stuart

Nice hawk, Looking at your site gave me the impression that you are using brand new RR spikes. If so where do you get them and are they high(er) carbon??

Rocketmann I only have few new ones that I ran across at the scrap yard. The rest are old. I wish I could run across a barrel full of new ones. They are so much easier to work with, The ones I have are just the regular high carbon spikes.

Sweet hawk!, I just had a thought, a few years ago the UPRR put in all new concrete ties on their mainline (110 trains per day avg.) through here, I think I saw some spikes for sale around here someplace granted they wouldn't be new but if anyone wants me to look further ler me know.
