I have a good friend that works for the railroad,so i made him a spike knife. He just called me today and said he has a truck full O' stuff for me.
Does anybody know whats good from the railroad.Spikes are good noveltys and practice. He has some sort of spring clips,3rd rail shoes? Creepers? Has anyone messed with this stuff before besides the normal spike knife/hawk ?

I just got some track clips that I'm about to start playing with. Supposedly they're higher carbon than the HC spikes. I think I recall hearing something in the 1080-1095 range for the spring clips. I plan to grab a bunch more from where I got the few I have if the initial experiments go well...

I know the creepers and srping clips have a really nice ring. Much of the material found in the R/R industry is high carbon material. Forge out a piece and do a quench test on it. I used to work for the R/R and have (literally) a ton of springs and other stuff i picked up off the tracks. i have only used the springs but will be playing with some of the other stuff in the future.

Thats good news! Q, my friend in the track crew has free grabs on all that stuff. As always I'll be hoarding whatever i can for the proper distribution.Maybe i can forge weld the springs to the spikes,to make a working blade.
On a side note i got pretty decent results for hardness with the spikes in some superquench.

if he can get those big huge coil springs... those are excellent... .. they spark kinda like 1080 with a little extra

I once held a knife with the handle made from the wood form underneeth the rails. It lookd good, a deep dark brown.
Perhaps nice to stay with the railroad-theem.
