You are hiking in the mountains where the weather and temperature can change quickly.
What do you carry in your daypack for protection from the rain and the cold?

I have a fleece pullover and a nylon anorak (mines from Wintergreen). In addition, no matter when I'm hiking I always have gloves and fleece cap in my pack.

Lightweight L.L. Beanerschnitzle rain suit.

If it's cold, I always have cold weather clothing.

In terms of insulating clothing, I've got a sweater made by Polartec (the best maker of polyester fleece fabric, in many people's opinions), and specifically, made of their Wind Pro fabric. Wind Pro really does cut the wind pretty good, thereby making the sweater--a pull over--seem a lot, lot warmer. I recommend it.

Usually a fleece. When out doing fieldwork in cooler climates, I have a super compressible down jacket. What might be called a "puffy jacket". It's super light weight, very warm and compresses into it's own pocket. I know North Face makes them. Sierra designs, MEC here in Canada. I even saw a Browning model at my Cabela's (yes we have one in Winnipeg now :) ) I also always carry a windshirt. I got mine at MEC. They are extremely lightweight, weatherproof/waterproof if treated and can be slipped over a fleece to make it windproof. Spent a lot of time tramping in New Zealand in mountains where the weather can change hourly and also here in Manitoba where it changes every 1/2 hr :D Saved my bacon a few times . . .
